The Blessed One, the Tathagata Jewel Arm, said to me, 'In the future, you will become a Blessed One, a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Enlightened Buddha.' He did not give me a prediction of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. Shariputra, it is like this: countless eons ago, from Jewel Arm onwards, a Tathagata named Dipamkara appeared in the world. And at that time, there was a king named Subduer of Enemies. Shariputra, the city of King Subduer of Enemies, called Lotus City, was prosperous, vast, peaceful, bountiful, joyful, and filled with many people. Shariputra, the Brahmin of King Subduer of Enemies, named Lord of Lamps, was like a great sala tree, a wealthy son, rich in wealth, with great possessions, filled to the brim with treasures and storehouses, and he was cherished, pitied, loved, and pleasing to King Subduer of Enemies. Seeing him, there was no discord. Shariputra, the Brahmin Lord of Lamps was like a great sala tree, and the king gave him half of the kingdom. Shariputra, it is like this: King Lord of Lamps, for the sake of the king, acted according to the Dharma, not according to what is not Dharma. Again, Shariputra, at another time, King Lord of Lamps had a son who was handsome, beautiful, pleasing to look at, exceedingly excellent, with a radiant complexion, endowed with the best qualities, and whose body was adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great man. Light emanated from his entire body, like that which comes from the orb of the moon. His name was given as Dipamkara. Shariputra, after that, King Lord of Lamps gathered Brahmins who were experts in signs and omens, and showed them the young prince Dipamkara, and they predicted his enlightenment. Thus, King Lord of Lamps entrusted the young prince Dipamkara to non-mothers. Shariputra, not long after that, the young prince Dipamkara became wise. Shariputra, after that, the sons of the gods of the Pure Abodes, having disappeared from the Akanistha heaven, went to where the Bodhisattva Dipamkara was, and having arrived, circumambulated the Bodhisattva Dipamkara.

Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva spoke these verses to Dipankara Buddha: "In this assembly of consorts, there is no source of merit. From the ascetic's victorious banner, one will realize the supreme Bodhi. Youth swiftly passes away, even faster than the force of the wind. Old age is the destruction of the body, the world is displeasing. A friend who is old and whose power has declined finds it difficult to renounce. You are in the prime of your youth, now is the time for your efforts. Well done! Well done! Great wisdom. Well done! Well done! Great intelligence. It would be good to quickly manifest, may you realize the steadfast Bodhi of the Sage." Chapter Twenty. Shariputra, then the gods of the Pure Abodes urged the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Dipankara, and with faith, he renounced from home to homelessness, and that very night he attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment and became a Buddha. That very night, the Blessed One Dipankara, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, having manifested perfect and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, became the greatest among the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and the sound of auspiciousness and verses manifested. King Shatrujit heard that the son of King Dipankara, without being taught, had manifested unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment and became a Buddha, and that very night it was widely proclaimed, becoming the greatest among the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and the sound of auspiciousness and verses were also heard. Shariputra, then King Shatrujit said to King Dipankara, "I have heard that your son has renounced and attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment and become a Buddha. I wish to see your son Dipankara. May the Blessed One, the Tathagata Dipankara, out of compassion, come to me. If he does not come, I myself will go with the fourfold army." The messenger thus reported. Then, Shariputra, King Dipankara gathered the astrologers, ministers, gatekeepers, and retinue, and repeated these things.

And, those gods thus requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One, with great compassion, thought, 'The king who subdues enemies will also come here.' Shariputra, after that, The King Holder of Light, together with his ministers, went to where the Blessed One Dipamkara was, and upon arriving, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and reported all that had happened. After thus reporting, the Blessed One Tathagata Dipamkara said to the King Holder of Light, 'Great King, because of compassion, I will go to the king who subdues enemies.' Shariputra, after that, the Blessed One Tathagata Dipamkara resided in the supreme palace of the king of divine objects as long as he pleased. Together with eighty kotis of Arhats and eighty-four thousand Bodhisattvas, he traveled through the lands. King Holder of Light also led his fourfold army and followed in attendance, offering the Tathagata Dipamkara and his retinue food, bedding, medicine, and provisions, and serving within his own realm. After that, he prostrated to the feet of the Blessed One Tathagata Dipamkara, circumambulated him three times, took his leave, and returned. The king who subdues enemies heard the news that the Blessed One Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha Dipamkara, together with eighty kotis of Arhats, was going to the Lotus King's palace. After that, the king who subdues enemies decorated the Lotus King's palace, ordered the removal of rubble and pebbles from the ground, the crossroads of the roads, and the intersections, and ordered sweeping, sprinkling perfume, spreading flowers so that they reached up to the knees, burning incense, and hanging various precious cloth banners. And ordered the playing of various musical instruments. After that, the king who subdues enemies decorated the Lotus King's palace,
