The root of diligence, the root of mindfulness, the root of samadhi, and the root of wisdom. Among these, what is the root of faith? It is to have faith in four dharmas. What are the four? To have excellent faith in the worldly right view that is practiced in samsara, to rely on its karmic results, and not to commit evil deeds even for the sake of life; and also to have faith in the conduct of bodhisattvas, and not to desire other vehicles after entering into practice; to have faith in the definitive meaning of ultimate truth, the profound dependent origination, the discrimination of sentient beings, emptiness, and all dharmas of the nature of signlessness, and not to conceal all that should be observed; and to have faith in all the Buddha's teachings, powers, and fearlessness, and to gather these dharmas without doubt or hesitation after hearing them, this is called the root of faith. What is the root of diligence? It is to cultivate whatever dharma one has faith in with the root of diligence, this is called the root of diligence. Whatever dharmas are gathered by diligence, the root of mindfulness does not let them be lost, this is called the root of mindfulness. Whatever dharmas are not lost by the root of mindfulness, the root of samadhi makes them one-pointed, this is called the root of samadhi. Whatever dharmas are made one-pointed by the root of samadhi, the root of wisdom distinguishes and examines them, and knowing those dharmas, this is called the root of wisdom. Thus, these five roots are interconnected, they perfect all the Buddha's teachings, and also attain the ground of prophecy. For example, just as one with the five outer knowledges, dwelling in the womb, does not prophesy to one dwelling in the womb until one has become the root of a woman or a man, similarly, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, do not prophesy to a bodhisattva who does not possess those roots, this is the five-limbed path. Therefore, a bodhisattva who is skilled in the five-limbed path, towards the Perfection of Wisdom

practices. Furthermore, Shariputra, what is a Bodhisattva who is skilled in the five limbs of the path? The five limbs are as follows: the power of faith, the power of diligence, the power of mindfulness, the power of samadhi, and the power of wisdom. Among these, what is the power of faith? It is not abandoning fondness and single-mindedness, even if an evil demon transforms into the form of the Buddha and comes before him, using certain words to separate him from any faith in the wisdom of the Dharma, saying that these are not the Buddha's teachings. Even if they try to thwart his aspirations, if he fully examines, the four great elements will change, but a Bodhisattva who has faith in the power of faith is not like that. Thus, a Bodhisattva cannot be separated from power, that is the power of faith. What is the power of diligence of a Bodhisattva? It is diligently striving, and for any virtuous Dharma, manifestly engaging with it, and even though they have obtained the power of steadfast strength, until they have not crossed over to that state, the worlds with gods cannot in any way prevent, show, or shake that power of strength. This should be known as the power of diligence of a Bodhisattva. What is the power of mindfulness of a Bodhisattva? It is abiding in mindfulness of the Dharma, and the mind also abides in the Dharma. No matter what kind of afflictions, they cannot abandon or distract it. By generating the power of mindfulness, all afflictions are destroyed, and that mindfulness does not disappear. This should be known as the power of mindfulness of a Bodhisattva. What is the power of samadhi of a Bodhisattva? It is practicing in solitude away from all disturbances. Even if he distinguishes all the sounds of the paths, he does not obstruct the thorn of sound in his first dhyana. Even if he distinguishes goodness, he still distinguishes, but it does not obstruct the second dhyana. He abides having generated joy and happiness, but it does not obstruct his third dhyana. Even though it is not abandoning for the sake of fully maturing all sentient beings and fully upholding the sacred Dharma, the fourth dhyana

nor will it be obscured. Therefore, if one abides in such meditation, neither meditation nor liberation can destroy it. This neither abandons the state of meditative absorption nor arises from the power of meditative absorption. This is the power of the bodhisattva's meditative absorption. What, then, is the power of the bodhisattva's wisdom? It is the wisdom that is not destroyed by worldly and transworldly dharmas. As soon as a bodhisattva is born, all the crafts, noble conduct, pleasing things, and difficult-to-obtain things that exist in the world become manifest without a teacher. Whatever is transworldly, and whatever I use to liberate the world, these arise from the power of the bodhisattva's wisdom and knowledge, and are not destroyed by gods and humans. This is the power of the bodhisattva's wisdom. This is another way of the five-limbed path. Thus, the bodhisattva, skilled in the five limbs, practices the perfection of wisdom. Furthermore, in brief, the path of the bodhisattvas has one beginning, and then one way of proceeding. For example, the bodhisattva, being unique and non-dual, for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, without relying on others, with the power of steadfast diligence, must be armored with the thought of fully possessing strength. Not instructed by others, not guided by others, self-reliant, truly surpassing by one's own strength. Having thus donned the armor, I must attain what all sentient beings have not yet attained. What all the noble ones and all the bodhisattvas newly entering the Great Vehicle have not attained, I must attain. Generosity is not my friend, I am the friend of generosity. Discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom are not my friends, I am the friend of those. I am not to be urged on by the perfections, but I am to urge on the perfections. Combine as before, and understand extensively all roots of virtue. I am not to be urged on by all roots of virtue, but
