The nature of mind is also without inherent characteristics. Mind cannot fully understand mind, mind cannot see mind, mind cannot perceive mind. Then, by what does one realize the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment? If the mind of enlightenment does not accord with the mind of virtuous roots, if the mind of virtuous roots also does not accord with the mind of dedication, if the mind of dedication also does not accord with the mind of enlightenment and the mind of virtuous roots, when one separately contemplates in this way, one should not be afraid, one should not be alarmed, one should not become alarmed. One should think thus: profound dependent origination, cause and effect are not wasted. If the dharma-nature of mind is such, the self-nature of mind is also such, yet all phenomena depend on causes and conditions, without a maker, without a lord, accomplishing as desired, I should diligently practice. The dharma-nature of mind should not be abandoned. What is the dharma-nature of mind? What is practice? Mind is like an illusion, there is no one who can obscure it, this is the dharma-nature of mind. Abandoning all possessions, dedicating them to the adornment of pure Buddha-fields, this is practice. Mind is like a dream, its nature is extremely peaceful, this is the dharma-nature of mind. Dedicating all the collections of precepts, etc., to swift manifestation, this is practice. Mind is like a mirage, utterly exhausted, this is the dharma-nature of mind. With the power of patience, dedicating oneself to accomplishing the stream of enlightenment, this is practice. Mind is like a moon in water, extremely solitary, this is the dharma-nature of mind. Initiating all diligence to completely perfect all the dharmas of the Buddha, and dedicating it, this is its practice. Mind is ungraspable, invisible, this is the dharma-nature of mind. Dedicating all meditation, liberation, samadhi, and equipoise to the samadhi of the Buddha, this is its practice. Sentient beings are formless, invisible, inaudible.

pa. Complete non-attention is the nature of the mind. Predicting the complete wisdom of the Buddha by understanding all the different words that are asked is its practice. The arising of mind on various objects is the nature of the mind. The mind that engages with the root of virtue is its practice. The non-arising of mind without a cause is the nature of the mind. The mind that generates the cause of the Dharma of the aspects of enlightenment is its practice. The non-arising of mind without an object is the nature of the mind. The mind that closely connects with the cause of the object of the Buddha is its practice. Shariputra, thus, the Bodhisattva contemplates the mind on the mind and cultivates mindfulness. When he dwells contemplating the mind on the mind, he makes the mind very focused in order to attain higher knowledge. Having attained higher knowledge, with one mind he thoroughly knows the minds of all sentient beings. Having known, he also expounds the Dharma of its nature. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva dwells contemplating the mind, and in order to attain great compassion, he makes the mind focused. Having attained great compassion, he is not weary of completely maturing all sentient beings. When he dwells contemplating the mind on the mind, in order to make the mind cease and the mind extinguish, he does not let the mind abide. Through the continuous connection of samsara, he manifests the mind. Through the mind's knowledge of mindfulness, he is in the state of the Dharmas that have entered into the unarisen and the certainly unarisen. He also does not fall into the grounds of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Until all the Buddha's Dharmas are completely perfected, he continuously maintains the continuum of the mind. Through the wisdom that is in accordance with one instant of the mind, he attains unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Shariputra, thus, the Bodhisattva contemplates the mind on the mind and cultivates mindfulness. Shariputra, how does the Bodhisattva contemplate the Dharma on the Dharmas and cultivate mindfulness? Shariputra, here, the Bodhisattva with noble wisdom

Those who see all phenomena with the eyes of […], will not be confused in the bardo between the emptiness of enlightenment. When one dwells observing phenomena in accordance with phenomena, one does not see even a particle of phenomena apart from emptiness, apart from signlessness, apart from wishlessness, apart from non-arising, apart from unborn, apart from non-manifestation, and apart from non-existence. One does not truly see even a particle of phenomena apart from dependent origination. When that Bodhisattva dwells observing phenomena in accordance with phenomena, he truly sees the nature of phenomena, and does not see what is not phenomena. What is phenomena? It is the meaning of selflessness, the meaning of no sentient beings, the meaning of no life, and the meaning of no person. This is what should be known as phenomena. What is not phenomena? It is seeing as self, seeing as sentient beings, seeing as life, seeing as person, seeing as annihilation, seeing as permanence, seeing as arising, and seeing as destruction. This is called non-phenomena. Furthermore, Shariputra, all phenomena are phenomena. All phenomena are also non-phenomena. Why is that? Because knowing emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, all phenomena are phenomena. Because of the latent tendencies of clinging to self and what belongs to self, all phenomena are also non-phenomena. When a Bodhisattva dwells observing phenomena in accordance with phenomena, among those phenomena, he does not see even a particle of phenomena that is not the Dharma of the Buddhas, that does not transform into enlightenment, that does not transform into Buddhahood, that does not transform into the path, that does not transform into liberation, and that does not transform into arising. Knowing that all phenomena arise, he obtains great compassion called unobstructed, and regarding the afflictions of all sentient beings, he does not regard them as being with afflictions, but regards them as being without afflictions, thus generating a false notion. Why is that? Because in this way, they truly enter into the definitive meaning, and there is no accumulation in afflictions, nor are there things of aggregates. They themselves are the enlightenment for subsequent realization.
