A Bodhisattva cultivates mindfulness, closely observing the body in the body. Furthermore, how does a Bodhisattva cultivate mindfulness, closely observing feelings in feelings? That is, whatever a Bodhisattva feels, he thinks, "All of this is suffering." He understands this with wisdom, understands with superior wisdom, and because he thoroughly understands the feeling understood by superior wisdom, although he experiences pleasant feelings, he does not allow the latent tendency of attachment to arise. Having recognized painful feelings, he generates great compassion for all those born in the lower realms, and he also does not allow the latent tendency of anger to arise. When touched by feelings that are neither pleasant nor painful, he also does not allow the latent tendency of ignorance to arise. With mindfulness that follows feelings, he observes that whatever feeling is felt, whether it is pleasant, painful, or neither pleasant nor painful, arises from those conditions. Furthermore, in order to fully understand the feelings of all sentient beings and to pacify them, he engages, knowing that these sentient beings do not understand that feelings arise from conditions, so they rejoice in pleasant feelings, are hostile to painful feelings, and are deluded by feelings that are neither pleasant nor painful. I shall teach the Dharma in order to sever the continuum of all the feelings of those sentient beings, with diligence sustained by skillful means and great compassion, having separately purified all feelings understood by wisdom and superior wisdom. Why is it called feeling? Because feeling that is contemplated turns into happiness, and feeling that is not contemplated turns into suffering. What is that feeling that is contemplated? It is that in this, there is no self, no sentient being, no life, no person who feels, but attachment is feeling, grasping is feeling, taking is feeling, inversion is feeling, conceptual thought is feeling, the latent tendency of views is feeling, the consciousness in the eye is feeling, and so on up to the consciousness in the mind is feeling. The consciousness of form is feeling, and so on up to the consciousness of dharmas is feeling. Whatever arises from the condition of contact through the union of the eye

The feeling arising from earth is either happiness, or suffering, or neither happiness nor suffering, that is called feeling. As before, combining the internal and external dharmas, gathering between consciousness, the feeling arising from the cause of contact is either happiness, or suffering, or neither happiness nor suffering, that is called feeling. Furthermore, in terms of categories, there is one feeling, that is, it is distinguished solely by the mind. There are two feelings, namely external and internal. There are three feelings, namely distinguishing the past, distinguishing the future, and distinguishing the present. There are four feelings, namely distinguishing the four elements. There are five feelings, namely attending to the five aggregates. There are six feelings, namely completely understanding the six sense bases. There are seven feelings, namely the seven abodes of consciousness. There are eight feelings, namely the eight wrong determinations. There are nine feelings, namely the nine abodes of sentient beings. There are ten feelings, namely the ten paths of virtuous actions. Combining as before, everything is feeling, however many objects there are, however many intentions there are, all those are the function of feeling. Therefore, the feelings of immeasurable beings are called immeasurable. Therefore, a Bodhisattva abiding in the contemplation of feeling, should generate wisdom regarding the arising, ceasing, and abiding of the feelings of all sentient beings, that is, knowing the virtuous and non-virtuous feelings of all sentient beings, that is the mindfulness of the contemplation of feeling by a Bodhisattva. Among them, what is the mindfulness of the contemplation of mind by a Bodhisattva? That is, the Bodhisattva's non-forgetfulness, concealment, complete protection, and non-distraction. Discriminating and contemplating in this way, the mind arises, then ceases, dissolves, and does not remain, therefore it does not remain internally, nor does it move externally, the mind that I initially generated has also been exhausted, has transformed, does not remain in a place, does not remain in a direction, therefore it cannot be found, whatever roots of virtue have been cultivated by any mind have also been exhausted, disappeared, have transformed, do not remain in a place, do not remain in a direction.
