in between. Thus, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara, said to me: 'Young man, in the future, after immeasurable kalpas, you will become the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni.' Furthermore, Shariputra, as soon as the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara, gave the prophecy, I immediately attained the Dharma body. After I possessed the Dharma body, under Dipamkara, the lord of the gods, Indra, named Beautiful Eyes, the lord of the thirty-three, became famous for his great magical powers, great strength, and great authority. At that time, in this Jambudvipa, there appeared one hundred million four thousand great cities, as well as countless villages, market towns, and mountain forests. All those great cities, market towns, and countless mountain forests were filled with billions of living beings. Also, at that time, there occurred the intermediate kalpa of great famine, and most sentient beings became covered with wounds, their bodies decaying, and filled with tumors, sores, boils, scabies, and afflicted by wind, bile, and phlegm. Then, hundreds of thousands of doctors diligently tried to pacify the diseases within those sentient beings. Shariputra, at that time, those sentient beings could not find help, and without refuge or protection, they uttered a great cry: 'Gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, rakshasas, as well as humans and non-humans, who will liberate us from disease? Who will liberate us from suffering? We will give all our wealth, follow his teachings, and repay his kindness.' Fifteenth fascicle. Furthermore, Shariputra, with my pure divine eye that transcends human capabilities, I saw those sentient beings tormented by disease, most of them covered with wounds, their bodies decaying, and filled with tumors, sores, boils, scabies, and afflicted by wind, bile, and phlegm. With my pure divine ear that transcends human capabilities, I heard those sentient beings uttering a great cry. Having seen and heard, I thought of all sentient

I generated great compassion for them, and I thought to myself: May it become a dwelling for these sentient beings! May it become a refuge for sentient beings without refuge! May it become a support for sentient beings without support! May I provide assistance to sentient beings without help! Thinking thus, Shariputra, I concealed the great body of Indra and, not far from the great city of Kuru, I was born as a bird named "Certainty," and stayed in the sky above, urging all the beings of Jambudvipa with these verses: Not far from the city of Kuru, there is a kind of bird called "Certainty." Whoever eats its flesh completely, all of them will be freed from disease. Do not be afraid or fearful, enjoy its flesh as you wish! It does not cause harm, there is no anger or scolding. It is the essence of Jambudvipa. Thus, Shariputra, from those eighty-four thousand great cities, and from villages, towns, marketplaces, and empty forests, all the sick sentient beings who heard that sound went to the great city called Kuru, and to where the bird called "Certainty" was. Having gone there, they cut flesh from the body of the bird called "Certainty" and took it away, but the flesh on its body did not completely disappear. At that time, this verse arose: Because enlightenment is touched by truth, the aggregate of wisdom will not be exhausted. If my words become true, then the flesh on the body will never be exhausted. Thus, Shariputra, all the beings of Jambudvipa cut and took the flesh of the bird called "Certainty," but its body neither diminished nor appeared full. Even though the flesh was cut, it grew back as before. Again, Shariputra, if any sick sentient beings ate the flesh of the bird called "Certainty," all their diseases would be purified, and they would become free from disease and pain. Likewise, gradually all the various diseases of all the sick in Jambudvipa were purified, and they became free from disease and happy. Then, the Jambud

The men and women, boys and girls, and all the people of Bu'i Ling thought to themselves: 'If this being called "Despa" completely frees us from illness and makes us happy, what offerings and respect should we give to it?' They all gathered together. Having gathered, they went to where the being called "Despa" was. Having arrived, they circled the being Despa and then spoke this verse: You are the abode and refuge, You are the doctor, you yourself are the medicine. What offerings should we make to you? Please instruct us. Sharibu, I realized, "Alas, the gathering of people has been completed," and I made that great body disappear. I sat on my own seat of Indra and said to those great crowds of people: Friends, I do not need villages, cities, towns, lands, and the palaces of kings. Friends, I do not need the objects of fields, the objects of houses, the objects of markets, guests, gold, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, agate, and coral. Friends, I do not need elephants, horses, mules, cows, donkeys, sheep, poultry, and pigs. I also do not need men, women, girls, male servants, female servants, workers, and people who live on wages. I also do not need food, drink, bedding, medicine for treating illnesses, utensils, pleasure gardens, and the enjoyments of ascetic forests. Friends, abandon killing and return from killing. Abandon taking what is not given and return from taking what is not given. Abandon sexual misconduct and return from sexual misconduct. Abandon lying and return from lying. Abandon slander and return from slander. Likewise, abandon harsh speech, idle talk, covetousness, harmful thoughts, and even wrong views, and return from wrong views.
