No one ever looked up at their faces even once. For a thousand years, they stayed under a certain tree, never looking up at that tree even once. For a thousand years, they never changed their monastic robes even once. For a thousand years, they never even conceived a thought of desiring sensual pleasures. They did not conceive a thought of harming others. They conceived a thought of violence. For a thousand years, they never even conceived a thought of dedicating merit to the moon, or the sun, or their father, or their mother, or their brother, or their sister, or their relatives. For a thousand years, they never even conceived a thought of staying at home. For a thousand years, they never looked up at the moon, or the sun, or the shapes of the stars, or the sky. For a thousand years, they never approached walls or trees. For a thousand years, they never anointed their bodies with butter or oil. For a thousand years, they never even conceived a thought of wanting to have butter. They never even conceived a thought of being disgusted with their bodies. For a thousand years, they never even conceived a lazy thought of "We cannot attain the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment." For a thousand years, they never experienced physical or mental illness. For the past thousand years, they never even conceived the thought of shaving their hair. Otherwise, the Four Great Kings would come, stroke their heads, take the hair, and return it. They took the hair and built stupas. For a thousand years, they never conceived the thought of the Four Great Kings coming and going, neither coming nor going. For a thousand years, when the shadow fell, they did not conceive the thought of the sun; when the sun shone, they did not conceive the thought of the shadow. For a thousand years, even in cold weather, they never conceived the idea of covering their bodies.

Those two did not speak worldly words even several times in a thousand years. Also, Shariputra, at that time a demon called "making memory faint" appeared. Like my sinful demon now. Shariputra, the demon "making memory faint" filled the place of practice of the Bodhisattva's vows with sword blades. He generated the perception of a sword blade for that sword blade, and therefore he dwelt in carelessness. He uttered the sound "I dwell in carelessness." That sound made the realm of the three thousand great thousand worlds hear it. Shariputra, like that, he made the realm of the three thousand great thousand worlds hear it. Then, from the sky above, hundreds of thousands of millions of gods of the demon host uttered the sound, "Alas! The Bodhisattva has not died and been reborn! Has not died and been reborn!" Shariputra, then the Bodhisattva's vows, walking like that, entered into the object of the generation of the mind. Also, Shariputra, the second sound uttered together with the gods, the Bodhisattva's vows did not hear. Whether it was the sound of the gods, or the sound of the vows, those two, the Bodhisattva's vows, abiding, did not hear, Shariputra, those two excellent beings possessed such conduct, such behavior, such diligence, such great compassion, such steadfastness. Those two practiced mindfulness of the Buddha for a thousand years. When the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Manifestly Supreme King, completely passed into nirvana. Then, after a god had passed away, he proclaimed, "Noble sons, the Thus-Gone One has completely passed into nirvana." Those two, having heard "completely passed into nirvana," went to where the throne of the Blessed One was. Standing with palms joined, they looked without blinking their eyes for seven days. They remembered with love and incomparable reverence. They did not abandon diligence, and standing, they ended the time of death. They, from then on, died and were reborn in the Brahma world. Those two Brahma
