They also waste the roots. The Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who abide in discipline will no longer follow, and they will not quickly realize and fully awaken to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. What are the five? They are practicing immoral discipline, slandering the true Dharma, being attached to gains, respect, and offerings, having strong ego-grasping, and generating jealousy and miserliness towards others' families. Shariputra, if a renunciate Bodhisattva possesses these five qualities, they will not rejoice in the appearance of the Buddha, will not rely on virtuous friends, and as before, they will not quickly realize and fully awaken to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Shariputra, it is like a hungry dog taking a bone without meat and stained with blood, placing it at the gate of the street, and licking the bone covered with saliva. Then, a dog of noble lineage comes, like a great Sala tree; or a dog of Brahmin lineage comes, like a great Sala tree; or a dog of householder lineage comes, like a great Sala tree. When that hungry dog sees the other dog coming from afar, it thinks: This fellow is going to snatch my delicious food. Then it glares fiercely, bares its teeth, and barks loudly. Shariputra, what do you think? Does that person want that bone without meat and stained with blood? He replied: Bhagavan, no. Sugata, no. The Bhagavan said: Why does that dog glare fiercely, bare its teeth, and bark loudly? He replied: It thinks: This fellow is going to snatch my delicious food. So it glares fiercely, bares its teeth, and barks loudly. The Bhagavan said: Shariputra, similarly, those monks who are diligent in household miserliness, preach, and are attached to monasteries surrounded by urine will appear. Having obtained such a leisure and endowment, they waste it in vain. I say they are like dogs. The Tathagata does not speak these words only for them. Furthermore, Shari

Shariputra, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, who seek the wisdom of the Buddha for the benefit of many beings and for the happiness of many beings, even if they completely give up their own flesh, what need is there to say that they will not become jealous and stingy for the sake of considering and serving other people's families? Moreover, Shariputra, those foolish people, who are engrossed in the affairs of life, the disturbances of servitude and the world, who are devoted to food and life, will become jealous and stingy towards other people's families for the sake of considering and serving them. Shariputra, if they see such diligent monks, they will become jealous and stingy, thinking: 'I knew this person before, where did he come from later?' 'This person used to be close to me, where did he come from later?' They will say this. If those patrons make promises about alms bowls, Dharma robes, and offerings, or make promises about beds, healing medicines, and utensils, they will think: 'They used to make promises to me, but later they give to the newcomers.' Therefore, they will generate three faults. What are the three? They generate faults towards the dwelling, thinking of leaving this place; they know what should not be known, but do not know what should be known; even if they rely on it slightly, it is not stable. This is generating faults towards the patrons, they will make that monk speak of three situations. What are the three? Speaking of the faults of the dwelling, speaking of unpleasant things, destroying the family, speaking untruthful words, saying that these non-noble people are deceiving.' With the intention of trust, they correctly proclaim the Dharma that should be promised. Shariputra, if they are so stingy towards the family, the white Dharma will completely decline. Shariputra, those non-noble people who abide in stinginess towards the family will abandon the precepts, and the Bodhisattvas who abide in the precepts.

Furthermore, Shariputra, it should be known that in the past, countless eons ago, in that vast, immeasurable, and inconceivable time, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Samyaksambuddha named Manifestly Exalted (Tibetan: mngon par 'phags). He possessed perfect knowledge and conduct, was a Sugata, a knower of the world, a guide for those who need to be tamed, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Bhagavan. That Buddha remained for ninety billion years. His Shravaka disciples numbered ninety billion as well, and the Shravaka disciples gathered together. They were all Arhats, having exhausted defilements, without defilements, possessing mastery, having reached the supreme other shore of all mental mastery. Moreover, at that time, there was a householder named Widely Differentiating, who was wealthy and had great possessions, possessing vast fields for enjoyment and many possessions, owning many properties, possessing a great deal of wealth and goods, including conches, gold, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, shells, agate, coral, silver, and a great deal of copper. He had many male servants, female servants, workers, and those who lived on wages, as well as a large number of elephants, horses, sheep, and goats. He possessed a great deal of wealth, grain, storehouses, and granaries. He had two sons, one named Discipline, who was handsome, beautiful, pleasing to behold, and possessed the supreme complexion; the other named Abiding in Discipline. At another time, they both entered the house together. Shariputra, thereafter, that Bhagavan, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha Manifestly Exalted, in the early morning, put on his Dharma robes and lower garments, carried his bowl, surrounded by the Sangha of monks, with the Sangha of monks leading the way, went to that city for alms. He was delightful, his senses were pacified, his mind was pacified, he was supremely tamed, he had attained the supreme of tranquility, he was extremely tamed and had attained tranquility, his senses were tamed and concealed, he was extremely tamed like an elephant, he was calm and clear like the ocean without turbidity, like an offering of gold.
