Not making the ground, not relying on virtuous friends, not obtaining leisure and endowment, all virtuous dharmas practiced become futile, and bodhisattvas mahasattvas who do not abide in vows do not follow, therefore, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment cannot be quickly manifested and completely attained. What are the five dharmas? Shariputra, here, a bodhisattva householder is blamed by the king, many people are frightened, and many people pray to him, saying, 'Please do this for us.' He agrees, saying, 'I will do it,' but does not do it, and only remains on the surface of words. Why is that? Shariputra, such a dharma assembly will fall from high places. Shariputra, such a dharma assembly will also cause the attainment of leisure and endowment to decline. Shariputra, a bodhisattva householder who is endowed with this first dharma, from not pleasing the appearance of the Buddha for the sake of nourishing the body, up to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, will also not quickly manifest and completely attain enlightenment. Shariputra, furthermore, a bodhisattva householder is attached to harming the city. What is harming the city?

Until one cannot manifest and perfectly awaken to complete enlightenment. Shariputra, furthermore, a bodhisattva householder who abides in the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya creates obstacles to the Dharma for his parents, as well as obstacles to the Dharma for his sons, daughters, wives, and sisters, as well as obstacles to the Dharma for his friends, relatives, and blood relations, and likewise, also creates obstacles to the Dharma for other sentient beings, which will become a long-lasting obstacle to the Dharma. Shariputra, a bodhisattva who possesses this third Dharma, due to creating obstacles to the Dharma, from not pleasing the appearance of the Buddha, until unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, will also not quickly manifest and perfectly awaken to complete enlightenment. Furthermore, when a bodhisattva householder hears such sutras spoken by the Tathagata, which are about having few desires, being content, reducing possessions, and being in harmony, he does not believe, and also causes others to hold the same view, and he reviles the Tathagata's teachings, is not pleased, and goes to the degraded realms. What are the degraded realms? They are rebirth among sentient beings in hell, the animal realm, the realm of Yama, people in border regions, those with impaired limbs, mlecchas, and those with wrong views. Shariputra, a bodhisattva householder who possesses this fourth Dharma, from not pleasing the appearance of the Buddha, until unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, will also not quickly manifest and perfectly awaken to complete enlightenment. Shariputra, furthermore, a bodhisattva householder relies on ministers and other powerful retinues who are not ministers, and relying on their power, scolds and abuses many people, reviles them with harsh and cruel words, slanders, mocks, and creates discord, and because he possesses these faulty behaviors, he will obtain a terrifying body in the lower realms. Shariputra, a bodhisattva householder who possesses this fifth Dharma does not please the appearance of the Buddha, nor does he rely on virtuous friends, nor does he obtain leisure and endowments.

The roots of virtue accumulated in this way will also be exhausted. The Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who abide in vows will also not follow, and they will not quickly realize and attain perfect enlightenment. Then, the Bhagavan spoke these verses at that time: Karma is of such a nature that it does not increase wisdom, and the mind quickly becomes unruly. It does not please the excellent ones; it deceives sentient beings. Like the adornments of a royal palace retinue, with those non-virtuous roots, one cannot see the protector of the world. Saying, "I will seize, I will enjoy," creating fear for sentient beings, and having committed sinful deeds, one does not please the excellent ones. Monks and nuns, having broken their vows, suffer, and do not please many Buddhas. It is difficult to obtain leisure in this state. Fathers, mothers, and wives become obstacles to practicing the Dharma, and one cannot quickly hear the Dharma, and one will be obscured by ignorance. Having created obstacles to going forth into renunciation, one does not please many Buddhas, and leisure will not arise in this state. Wherever emptiness is praised, having heard such a Dharma, one becomes angry and says, "This is not the Dharma." With all these obstacles, not even one-sixteenth will be approached. Having slandered the true Dharma, one becomes blind and suffers greatly, unable to see the perfect Buddha, and even if one sees, one will not develop faith, and one will become a woman, a eunuch, a blind person, as well as a dog and a donkey. Whoever, for the Buddhas, enlightenment, and the joy of Bodhisattvas, having completely eliminated obstacles, cultivates the paths of the virtuous. Fathers and mothers should repeatedly practice this Dharma, and quickly cause all sentient beings to go forth into renunciation. If the mother practices the Dharma, she will quickly go to a good rebirth. Because of praising renunciation, one will quickly realize enlightenment. Shariputra, a renunciate Bodhisattva possessing five qualities does not please the Buddhas, does not rely on a spiritual friend, and does not obtain leisure and endowments. The roots of virtue accumulated in this way...
