Afterwards, the body will be harmed. Thus, clinging to the notions of self and other will lead to clinging to notions. Furthermore, Shariputra, all childish ordinary beings are bound by notions. Shariputra, the Bodhisattva, recognizing such inverted notions, does not rely on anyone. Why is that? Because reliance brings fear, and I do not desire fear. Shariputra, therefore, the Bodhisattva does not trust all sentient beings. Shariputra, how does a Bodhisattva generate the notion of parents towards all sentient beings? Shariputra, for a Bodhisattva, in a long period of time, it is not easy to find a sentient being who has not been a mother or a father; all sentient beings have been parents. If a mind of desire arises towards them, one abandons the notion of mother. If a mind of hatred arises, one abandons it with the notion of father. Shariputra, in this way, one should recognize that all sentient beings are relatives of the Bodhisattva. Shariputra, in the past, in a time long ago, immeasurable kalpas ago, there was a time when a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Vidyacharanasampanna, Sugata, Lokavidu, Anuttara-purushadamyasarathi, Shasta Devamanushyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Supreme Assembly (mchog gi tshogs can), appeared in the world. He lived for ninety billion years. His assembly of Shravaka disciples numbered ninety billion hundred thousand kotis. At that time, there was a Bodhisattva named Memory Attained (dran pa rnyed), who was born into a royal family, handsome and beautiful, pleasing to the eye, possessing the best and most radiant complexion. As soon as he was born, his mother gave him eighty-four thousand daughters, his father gave him eighty-four thousand daughters, friends, relatives, and in-laws gave him eighty-four thousand daughters, and his parents' relatives and friends also gave him eighty-four thousand daughters as attendants for marriage. Shariputra, the Bodhisattva's father had three palaces built, like this

Then he made spring dwellings, summer dwellings, and winter dwellings. The Bodhisattva dwelt in due season on the upper story of the house. When he dwelt there, hundreds of thousands of musical instruments came to pay homage and serve him. As soon as the sound of the music arose, the Bodhisattva had thoughts of arising and ceasing. As soon as the sound ceased, he sought everywhere, "Where did this sound come from? Where did it arise? From where did it cease? Where did it disappear?" Thus, neither the thought of night arose, nor did the thought of day arise. Furthermore, he had thoughts of impermanence, and thus he had thoughts of displeasure. Shariputra, in this way, the Bodhisattva who had obtained mindfulness never had his mind attached to music for forty thousand years. For forty thousand years, he never indulged in desires. Then, while dwelling in his house, he meditated on the four meditations and accomplished the five superknowledges. Then, from that house, by means of magical power, from the upper sky, he went to where the retinue of the Blessed One, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One was, thinking, "I will offer a small root of virtue to the retinue of the Blessed One, the Tathagata." Shariputra, the retinue of the Blessed One, the Tathagata, passed into complete nirvana during that very day. He went to the place where the Tathagata had passed into complete nirvana and asked the monks, "Can I make offerings to the Tathagata?" The monks replied, "Noble son, the Tathagata has passed into complete nirvana." Having heard that the Tathagata had passed into complete nirvana, he wept and fainted in that very place, falling face down on the ground. At that time, he spoke these verses: "The lamp of the world is like this, having gone beyond the furthest shore of all dharmas. Because I went to a place of heedlessness, I was completely deceived by myself. In millions of billions of kalpas, a Tathagata will arise. I have not pleased the protector, who will be my refuge? The one who did not tell me about the Buddha, I think my mother is my enemy. As soon as I was born, I should have seen the Tathagata. Who is it that joined me to desire? It is the father."
