Chapter Seven: The Perfection of Discipline Chapter Seven: The Perfection of Discipline Ninth Volume. Among these, through what diligence does a Bodhisattva engage in the conduct of enlightenment, becoming a Bodhisattva Mahasattva with the perfection of discipline? Shariputra, there are three things that are the excellent conduct of Bodhisattvas. What are the three? Excellent conduct of body, excellent conduct of speech, and excellent conduct of mind. Among these, what is excellent conduct of body? Shariputra, for a Bodhisattva, it is abandoning killing, abandoning taking what is not given, and abandoning sexual misconduct. This is called excellent conduct of body. Furthermore, Shariputra, a Bodhisattva abandons false speech, abandons divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter. This is called excellent conduct of speech. Furthermore, Shariputra, a Bodhisattva has no covetousness, no harmful intent, and has right view. This is called excellent conduct of mind. He thinks thus: What is excellent conduct of body? What is excellent conduct of speech? What is excellent conduct of mind? He thinks thus. He also thinks thus: Not killing, not stealing, and not engaging in sexual misconduct, this is called excellent conduct of body. He thinks thus. Then, what is excellent conduct of speech? He thinks thus: In speech, not speaking falsely, not being divisive, not speaking harshly or engaging in idle chatter, this is called excellent conduct of speech. He thinks thus. Then, what is excellent conduct of mind? He thinks thus: In mind, not being greedy, not harboring harmful intent, and not holding wrong views, this is called excellent conduct of mind. He thinks thus. He thus properly and individually examines, what actions are not done by the body, what actions are pure, and what actions are not done by the mind, what can that be established as? When he thus properly examines, he thinks thus: What actions are not done by the body, what actions are pure, and what actions are not done by the mind, is that blue? Is it

Or blue, or red, or white, or rainbow, cannot be considered the color of glass, not to be known by the eye, not to be known by consciousness, not to be known by the nose, not to be known by the tongue, not to be known by the body, not to be known by the mind. What is the reason for that? Like this, it is not born, not produced, not appeared, not grasped, it is not to be known by any action. He thinks like this: the precepts are not manifestly assembled. What is not manifestly assembled has no designation. What has no designation, one should not cling to self. Thinking like this, the precepts that are well practiced in this way cannot be rightly seen in accordance with. By what precepts, and where the precepts are dedicated, it cannot be rightly seen in accordance with. Seeing it that way, with the view of the assembly of fears, one will not abandon the view of the assembly of fears that separately discerns precepts or immoral precepts. Seeing it that way, one will guard, rituals, conduct, and the realm of conduct, and will act knowingly, and acting knowingly is called having precepts. He does not act clinging to self, he does not act clinging to others, he is one who does not lose the precepts and does not cling to the precepts as supreme. Clinging to self, one will cling to precepts. One who does not cling to self will not cling to precepts. One who does not cling to precepts will not cause the training to be lost. One who does not cause the training to be lost will not cause the precepts to be lost, and will not cling to the precepts as supreme. Why not cling to the supreme? Because he knows all dharmas from others. What is the other? It is selflessness. What is selflessness? What should be completely grasped for what is selfless? Then, the Blessed One at that time spoke these verses: The body is pure and pure with purity, the mind is pure and always practices good, constantly abiding in pure asceticism, that is the Bodhisattva who possesses precepts. These ten paths of action that are extremely good, whoever guards them, whoever is a wise Bodhisattva. What is not done by body, speech, and mind, that is the wise one.
