Therefore, it should be known as irreversible. Furthermore, the great compassion of the Tathagata is not something that can be comprehended by actions. It is immeasurable, inconceivable, incomparable, incalculable, inexpressible, and inexhaustible, and difficult to understand. Why is that? Just as the Tathagata attains enlightenment, so too does the great compassion of the Tathagata enter into sentient beings. Whatever the nature of enlightenment, so too is great compassion. How does the Tathagata attain enlightenment? The Tathagata attains enlightenment that is without root and without place. What is its root? What is its place? The aggregates are the root, and non-veridical attention is the place. Because of the equality of enlightenment, the Tathagata knows them to be equal. Therefore, the Tathagata is known to have fully awakened to enlightenment that is without root and without place. The great compassion of the Tathagata enters into sentient beings, thinking, "These sentient beings do not know what is without root and without place; I shall make them know." Furthermore, Shariputra, enlightenment is peace and near-peace. How is it peace? How is it near-peace? It is inner peace, and outer near-peace. Why is that? The eye is empty of self and what belongs to self. Because this is its nature, it is therefore called peace. Likewise, the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are empty of self and what belongs to self. Because this is their nature, they are therefore called peace. Having fully understood the emptiness of the eye, one does not pursue forms; therefore, it is called near-peace. Even up to the mind, having fully understood emptiness, one does not pursue dharmas; therefore, it is called near-peace. The great compassion of the Tathagata enters into sentient beings, thinking, "These sentient beings do not know this peace and near-peace; I shall make them know." Furthermore, Shariputra, I have fully awakened to perfect enlightenment through the luminosity of intrinsic nature. How is it luminous? Whatever is intrinsic nature is without all afflictions, like the sky. It is the nature of the sky, following the sky.

It is like that. The equality that is equal to space, that is, the nature is extremely clear, because they do not understand this naturally clear nature, therefore, each individual ordinary being is completely defiled by sudden afflictions. Since sentient beings do not know this naturally clear nature, in order to make them understand this naturally clear nature, the great compassion of the Tathagata arises for sentient beings. Furthermore, Shariputra, I attained perfect enlightenment with no taking and no abandoning. What is no taking, and what is no abandoning? No taking means not grasping all phenomena. No abandoning means not completely grasping all phenomena. Therefore, the Tathagata sees the nature of no taking and no abandoning as equality. Just as the Tathagata sees no this shore and no other shore, similarly, the Tathagata awakened to the fact that all phenomena are free from this shore and the other shore, therefore he is called the Tathagata. Since sentient beings have not understood this no taking and no abandoning, in order to make them understand, the great compassion of the Tathagata arises for sentient beings. Furthermore, Shariputra, I attained perfect enlightenment with no characteristics and no object of focus. What is no characteristic? What is no object of focus? Not focusing on the consciousness of the eye is no characteristic. Not truly seeing form is no object of focus. Up to not focusing on the consciousness of the mind is no characteristic. Not truly seeing dharma is no object of focus. Thus, Shariputra, no characteristic and no object of focus are the realm of activity of the noble ones. What is the realm of activity of the noble ones? The three realms are the realm of activity of the noble ones. Since the realm of activity of the noble ones is not the realm of activity of all ordinary beings, it should be understood, the great compassion of the Tathagata arises for sentient beings. Shariputra, enlightenment is not past, not future, and not present, it is the wheel of equality of the three times.
