Having seen this land without bees, power lost, The merchant women did not desire (this), So I renounced my home and went forth. The children abide in the joy of desire, Everything has fallen under the power of contending with sin. The demons have taken control of everything, I went forth to gradually attain enlightenment. Those who dwell in homes are full of faults, Having seen such harm as this, I completely abandoned all lands, I went forth to exhaust birth. Then, about five hundred householders were amazed, saying, 'Alas, this must be the Buddha!' Realizing that it was the Buddha, the Buddha, they spoke these verses to the Bhagavan in one voice: About five hundred assembled merchants, Fearing old age, are present before the Victorious One. Please explain in detail the vast and supreme Dharma, Which completely eliminates old age and death. May all sentient beings in existence have good thoughts, Bhagavan, you are free from existence, liberated from fear. Please protect us from impermanent phenomena that will perish, Liberate beings who are trapped in the household of existence.

All these are naturally completely pure. The nature is originally clear, and the root is pure from the beginning. Without action, actor, and perceiver. Not heard from others, completely pure, seeing all. Practiced excellently, with boundless fame. Possessing the ten powers and being fearless. Boundless wisdom, with a mind like the sky. Please generously bestow teachings, and explain the supreme Dharma of the renunciates. Then, the Bhagavan thought to himself: Alas! These five hundred householders, their roots of virtue are fully ripened. Why not have them abandon the signs of householders in this very place, obtain ordination, and all attain the end of exhausting all defilements? I shall teach them the Dharma in such a way. Thus he thought. Then, the Bhagavan at that time sat cross-legged in the sky above. Then, those five hundred householders felt great joy, faith, admiration, and reverence towards the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan spoke to those five hundred householders: Householders, do you wish to be liberated from the ten torments? What are the ten? They are: the torment of birth, the torment of aging, the torment of sickness, the torment of death, the torment of sorrow, the torment of lamentation, the torment of suffering, the torment of displeasure, the torment of strife, and the torment of samsara. Householders, do you wish to be liberated from these ten torments? Furthermore, householders, do you wish to be liberated from the ten objects of mental torment? What are the ten? They are: knowing that harm has been done to oneself, causing mental torment; knowing that harm is being done, causing mental torment; knowing that harm will be done, causing mental torment; knowing that harm has been done to one's friend, causing mental torment; knowing that harm is being done to one's friend, causing mental torment; knowing that harm will be done to one's friend, causing mental torment; knowing that something beneficial has been done to someone unfriendly to oneself, causing mental torment; knowing that something beneficial is being done to someone unfriendly to oneself, causing mental torment; knowing that something beneficial will be done to someone unfriendly to oneself
