What is 'doing'? It is like this: the eye-source, the ear-source, the nose-source, the tongue-source, the body-source, and the mind-source. These are called the six sources. If there are name and form, then the six sources can be established. If there are no name and form, then the six sources cannot be established. What are name and form? It is like this: feeling, perception, mind, contact, attention, the four great elements, and the name and form that abide in the four great elements. These are called name and form. If there is consciousness, then name and form can be established. If there is no consciousness, then name and form cannot be established. What is called consciousness? It is like this: eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, and mind-consciousness. These are called consciousness. If there are formations, then consciousness can be established. If there are no formations, then consciousness cannot be established. What are called formations? It is like this: attending to form, attending to sound, attending to smell, attending to taste, attending to touch, and attending to phenomena. These are called formations. If there is ignorance, then formations can be established. If there is no ignorance, then formations cannot be established. What is called ignorance? It is like this: not knowing the former limit, not knowing the latter limit, not knowing the former and latter limits, not knowing the internal, not knowing the external, not knowing the internal and external, not knowing suffering, not knowing the origin, not knowing the cessation, not knowing the path. Thus, not knowing the cause, not knowing dependent arising, not knowing the dharmas of dependent arising, and not knowing black and white, cause and non-cause, appearance and non-appearance, with fault and without fault, what should be cultivated and what should not be cultivated.

That which is not knowing, not seeing, not clearly understanding, and not comprehending phenomena is called ignorance. If there is inappropriate attention, then ignorance is established; if there is no inappropriate attention, then ignorance is not established. What is called inappropriate attention? For example: Did I exist in the past? Did I not exist in the past? If I existed in the past, where did I exist in the past? What did I become in the past? Will I exist in the future? Will I not exist in the future? If I will exist in the future, where will I exist in the future? What will I become in the future? Thinking inwardly: What am I? Who am I? What is there? What is not there? What happened? What did not happen? What did I become? Where did it happen? What did I become? Where did it happen? If I happened, where did I happen? Am I happening now? Thus doubting and becoming of two minds. In this way, due to inappropriate attention, one of the six views arises, namely: the view that there is a self, the view that there is no self, the view that I truly see myself, the view that I truly do not see myself, the view that this is the self, this is the world, and the view that if something arises dependent on conditions, it is permanent, stable, constant, of unchanging nature, constantly and truly existing or will exist. This is called inappropriate attention. If there is unreal conceptualization, then inappropriate attention is established; if there is no unreal conceptualization, then inappropriate attention is not established. What is unreal conceptualization? For example: self, sentient being, life, person, individual, one who is born, mind-born, child, doer, feeler. This is unreal.

O! Those ordinary people who do not have learning, think and completely think of "self", and think and completely think of "sentient being", "life", "person", "born of strength", "son of strength", "maker", "feeler", this is called unreal parikalpana. Thus, if unreal parikalpana exists, then inappropriate attention will be established; if unreal parikalpana does not exist, then inappropriate attention will not be established. If inappropriate attention exists, then ignorance will be established; if inappropriate attention does not exist, then ignorance will not be established. If ignorance exists, then formations will be established; if ignorance does not exist, then formations will not be established... until if birth exists, then old age and death will be established; if birth does not exist, then old age and death will not be established, connect as before. Second Chapter. Thus, householders, all dharmas arise from unreal parikalpana, depend on conditions, have no power, and arise from conditions; if there are no conditions, then dharmas will not be established. Householders, all dharmas are merely designations; in this, apart from the cessation of the path, nirvana, there is no birth, aging, death, transference, or arising whatsoever. Householders, it is like this: for example, if fish live in a great lake, householders, what do you think? What is the power of those fish? They replied: World Honored One, it is the power of water. Sugata, it is the power of water. Then, householders, does the water have thought? They replied: World Honored One, it is not so. Sugata, it is not so. The Buddha said: Householders, since the water has no thought, what power does it have? World Honored One, there is no power. Sugata, the power is small. The Buddha said: Householders, similarly, all dharmas are unreal, arising from parikalpana, powerless, weak, arising from conditions; if conditions exist, then dharmas will be established. Householders, all dharmas are merely designations; in this, there is only the cessation of the path, nirvana.
