Saying "It is that" should not be viewed that way. Saying "I am old and frail, find my attendant," should not be viewed that way. Saying "Son of Maudgalyayana, go and fetch medicine from the physician king Jivaka and let us eat it," should not be viewed that way. Saying "The Tathagata argues with other heretical practitioners and wanderers with words," should not be viewed that way. Saying "The Tathagata's foot was pierced by a acacia thorn," should not be viewed that way. Saying "When the Tathagata promised to stay in the realm of no affliction, he ate horse feed barley for three months," should not be viewed that way. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Great Virtue Immaculate Pure Jewel Moonlight King said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, how should we view the Tathagata's prediction of unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment for the Shravakas?" The Bhagavan said: "Son of good family, my prediction of unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment for the Shravakas is a prediction based on their potential." He asked: "Bhagavan, although the Shravakas who have exhausted defilements and completely severed the bonds to existence have potential, how will they manifest and realize unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment?" The Bhagavan said: "Son of good family, therefore, listen to an example. Son of good family, for example, a king, a Kshatriya lineage, who has been crowned from the head..."

If someone were to possess all the skills of craftsmanship, but they were dull and not sharp, always learning what should be learned later first, and learning what should be learned first later. Son of good family, what do you think of this? Would someone say, "This must be the son of a king"? World Honored One, no. Well-gone One, no. They would say, "This is the son of a king." The World Honored One said: Son of good family, similarly, a Bodhisattva with good lineage, even if dull, through the path of meditation, first exhausts the afflictions and then manifestly and completely awakens to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Son of good family, what do you think of this? Would someone say, "He definitely will not awaken to perfectly complete enlightenment"? World Honored One, except for those with great desire, no one would say, "He will not awaken to perfectly complete enlightenment." In the world including gods, demons, ascetics, and brahmins, in the world including gods, humans, and asuras, no one would think that way. The World Honored One said: Son of good family, listen to another example. Son of good family, what do you think of this? A Bodhisattva abiding on the tenth ground, do they enter the heart of enlightenment after exhausting the obscurations of afflictions, or do they enter thinking they have not exhausted them? World Honored One, they enter after exhausting them. Well-gone One, they enter after exhausting them. The World Honored One said: Son of good family, what do you think of this? Would they definitely not awaken to perfectly complete enlightenment? World Honored One, they will awaken to perfectly complete enlightenment. Well-gone One, they will awaken to perfectly complete enlightenment. The World Honored One said: Son of good family, one should view this similarly. Ananda asked: World Honored One, how should we view what you said, "I am old"? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, even my future body, the body of the Thus-Gone One, as firm as a diamond, will also show signs of aging, let alone others?

If one thinks, 'What need is there to say more?' it is because of compassion that it was said that way. However, some foolish people cling only to the literal meaning, thinking, 'Does the body of the Thus-Gone One also get sick?' These people cause themselves to decline and also cause others to decline. The Thus-Gone One spoke in that way, considering this. Question: "Venerable One, you said, 'I am old and frail, go find my attendant.' How should we understand this?" The Blessed One replied: "Son of good family, it is also out of compassion for future beings that I said that. Those who need to attend to the bodies of my aged and frail hearers will appear, but the Thus-Gone One will not allow those things to happen." He spoke in that way to prevent decline. The Thus-Gone One spoke in that way, considering this. However, some foolish people cling only to the literal meaning, thinking, 'The Thus-Gone One is old and frail.' These people cause themselves to decline and also cause others to decline. Question: "Venerable One, you said, 'Maudgalyayana's son, go and get some medicine from the king of physicians, Jivaka, and eat it.' How should we understand this?" The Blessed One replied: "Son of good family, it is also out of compassion for future beings that I said that. Those of my hearers who need medicine will appear, but the Thus-Gone One will not allow those things to happen." He spoke in that way to prevent decline. The Thus-Gone One spoke in that way, considering this. However, some foolish people think that the king of physicians, Jivaka, showed no respect or reverence to the monk Maudgalyayana's son, and even when asked about his illness, he only hastily prescribed some medicine to cure the disease. Therefore, they think that the Thus-Gone One's body also has illnesses, and that faults appear in the Thus-Gone One's body. If such carelessness occurs even to those who have insight, what need is there to mention ordinary people? They cling only to the literal meaning of the words. These people cause themselves to decline and also cause others to decline.
