It should be known that this is a person with excessive pride. Thinking and arrogantly believing, 'I have attained, I have realized,' and completely distinguishing, it should be known that this is a person with excessive pride. Fearing the view of the perishable aggregate and tasting the flavor of the one path, it should be known that this is a person with excessive pride. Why is that? Because emptiness makes the view of the perishable aggregate empty, and the emptiness of emptiness also makes the one path empty. Not truly entering into such emptiness with emptiness, it should be known that this is a person with excessive pride. Venerable Ananda, furthermore, if a monk equates the emptiness of the view of the perishable aggregate and the emptiness of the one path with emptiness, it should be known that this is a person with excessive pride. Why is that? Venerable Ananda, emptiness is not other, and the view of the perishable aggregate is not other; the view of the perishable aggregate is emptiness. Emptiness is not other, and the path is not other; the path is emptiness. Venerable Ananda, furthermore, if a monk fears ignorance and craving for existence, and tastes the flavor of liberation from ignorance, it should be known that this is a person with excessive pride. Why is that? Because wherever dualistic consciousness arises, it is not liberation. Venerable Ananda, furthermore, if a monk fears desire, hatred, and delusion, and tastes the flavor of the three doors of liberation, fears the four inversions, and tastes the flavor of the four perceptions, fears the five obscurations, and tastes the flavor of the five faculties, fears the six sense sources, and tastes the flavor of the six superknowledges, fears the seven abodes of consciousness, and tastes the flavor of the seven limbs of enlightenment, fears the eight wrongnesses, and tastes the flavor of the eightfold noble path, fears the nine conditioned phenomena, and tastes the flavor of the nine successive abidings of meditative absorption, fears the ten unwholesome paths of action, and tastes the flavor of the no-more-learning.

tasting the flavor of the ten dharmas, and being afraid of the realm of conditioned things, and tasting the flavor of the realms of unconditioned things, one should know that this is someone with excessive pride. Why is that? Venerable Ananda, all of those are deceit, arrogance, and proliferation. Venerable Ananda, to the extent that there is deceit, arrogance, proliferation, high-mindedness, low-mindedness, grasping, increasing, complete discrimination, reliance, excessive attachment, and imputation, to that extent there is excessive pride endowed with increase. Therefore, Venerable Ananda, one should know that such a bhikshu is one with excessive pride. Why is that? Venerable Ananda, the praise of the realm of conditioned things and the emptiness of the realm of unconditioned things, not entering into equality with emptiness and emptiness itself, therefore one should know that this is someone with excessive pride. Then, the venerable Ananda said to Manjushri, who had become a youth, "Manjushri, how is it that a bhikshu is without excessive pride?" Manjushri said, "Venerable Ananda, when a bhikshu, through inner peace, sees that all realms are also peaceful, and whether it is equality or inequality, knowledge or ignorance, sign or signlessness, conditioned or unconditioned,

Thus, a monk without arrogance and without antidote, without bias, separated from his own sect and the sects of others, cutting off all feelings, and all feelings and non-feelings, and all objects, discriminations, and mental activities, without bonds, without attachment, peaceful, extremely peaceful, and nearly peaceful. Because he is free from the attachment to self and the attachment to what belongs to self, he does not truly follow and observe any dharma that should be abandoned, realized, or directly experienced. A monk who practices in this way is without arrogance. He understands the equality of all dharmas through the equality of the space element, so he does not ascribe to any dharma as being good, bad, blameworthy, blameless, defiled, undefiled, worldly, transcendent, conditioned, or unconditioned. Because he does not ascribe, he also does not become conceited, does not think, and does not discriminate; he does not truly follow and observe. He understands that all dharmas are equal without ascription, equal through equality, and equal like space. Venerable Ananda, a monk who believes in this way is called truly and completely liberated, and thus is without arrogance. With this intention, the Blessed One said, 'Just as space does not cling to the palm of the hand, so too is the dharma of a monk.' When this teaching was proclaimed, two hundred monks, without attachment, had their minds liberated from all defilements. Then, the son of the gods, Jewel Peak, said to Manjushri, who had become a youth: 'Manjushri, how does a Bodhisattva without arrogance communicate true wisdom?' Manjushri replied: 'Son of the gods, when a Bodhisattva, with the mind of omniscience, surpasses all three realms with a mind that is unequal and equal.'
