Its fully ripened result will be manifestly accomplished. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, those beings who have fully grasped birth in the realm of existence are called all afflictions. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, those all afflictions are also the very nature of the dharmadhatu, so whoever fully understands that all afflictions are the very nature of the dharmadhatu is called purified. But in the ultimate sense, there is neither defilement nor purification in it, nor is there anything that can be defiled. When Manjushri Kumara was teaching this doctrine, a hundred monks with excessive pride, without taking anything, their minds were liberated from the outflows. Then the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to Manjushri Kumara, "Manjushri, when you taught this doctrine, a hundred monks with excessive pride, without taking anything, their minds were liberated from the outflows. Manjushri, the dharmadhatu arises from you." Manjushri said, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, do you think that the nature of the dharmadhatu is first bound and then liberated?" He said, "Manjushri, the nature of the dharmadhatu is neither first bound nor liberated." He said, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, then from what did those monks' minds become liberated?" He said, "Manjushri, the Tathagata has tamed many shravakas, and their minds, without taking anything, were liberated from the outflows." Manjushri said, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, are you a shravaka of the Bhagavan?" He said, "Manjushri, that is so. I am a shravaka of the Bhagavan." He said, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, has your mind, without taking anything, been liberated from the outflows?" He said, "Manjushri, it is liberated." He said, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, is your past mind liberated, or is the future and present liberated?" Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the past mind is the characteristic of exhaustion, the future mind is the characteristic of not being obtained, and the present mind is the characteristic of not abiding.

If so, Venerable Sharadvatiputra, what is your mind's liberation? The Venerable Sharadvatiputra said: Manjushri, the past mind is not liberation, nor is the future or the present. Manjushri said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, then what is your mind's liberation? He said: Manjushri, it is only through conventional designation that the mind is shown to be liberated, but in ultimate truth, there is no object of mind to be bound or liberated in this. Manjushri said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, do you think that in the nature of the realm of dharma, there is conventional and ultimate truth? He said: Manjushri, in the nature of the realm of dharma, there is no object of conventional and ultimate truth. Manjushri said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, how does this show that the mind is liberated through conventional designation? He said: Manjushri, is there ever any liberation of the mind? Manjushri said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if a mind could be objectified within, without, or between the two, then there might be a change in the mind's liberation. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, since the mind is neither within, nor without, nor both, and there is no object, therefore, there is neither bondage nor liberation for it. Then, From that assembly, two hundred monks, having heard this teaching by Manjushri, who had become a youth, rose from their seats and exclaimed these words: If there is no one liberated here and no one not liberated, then what is the point of our ordination and full ordination as monks? If there is no definite emergence, then what is the point of meditating on the path? In this way, those monks, slandering and disheartened, left that assembly. Then, Manjushri, having become a youth, by the power of taming those monks, emanated an emanation monk in front of the path from which those monks were leaving. Then, those monks went to where the emanation monk was and said to the emanation monk: Venerable one, where do you come from? Then, this emanation said to those monks

Then he spoke thus: 'Venerable ones, I did not enter, did not understand, did not accept, and did not trust the Dharma taught by the youthful Manjushri, so I left the Sangha.' Then those two hundred monks also spoke thus: 'We also did not enter, did not understand, did not accept, and did not trust the Dharma taught by the youthful Manjushri, so we left.' Then the emanation monk said to those two hundred monks: 'Venerable ones, what disagreement did you hear in the Dharma taught by the youthful Manjushri that you left the Sangha?' They said: 'Venerable one, the Dharma taught by the youthful Manjushri is such that no one here attains it, no one realizes it, and no one is liberated. So we thought: If no one here attains it, no one realizes it, and no one is liberated, then what is the point of our going forth and taking full ordination as monks? What is the point of our abiding in celibacy? If there is no definite emergence here, then what is the point of meditating on the path?' Thinking thus, we left the Sangha.' Then the emanation monk said to the monks: 'Venerable ones, did you leave simply because you did not accept it? Or did you leave after abandoning and speaking ill of it?' They said: 'We left simply because we did not accept it; we neither abandoned it nor spoke ill of it.' Then the emanation monk gave the monks a 'well done' and also said: 'Venerable ones, non-contention is the supreme Dharma of the renunciants, so do not speak ill of it, do not argue, let us discuss it a little. Venerable ones, is the mind something that is blue? Is it something that is yellow? Is it something that is red? Is it something that is white? Is it something that is madder-colored? Is it something like the color of crystal? Is it something that is true? Is it something that is untrue? Is it something that is permanent? Is it something that is impermanent? Is it something that has form? Is it something that is formless?'
