One should attend to a spiritual friend with a mind like a carrying animal that bears heavy burdens with respect, a mind like an elephant with the thought of being tame and aware, a mind like a mountain that is unmoving and unshakeable, a mind like a dog that is without anger, a mind like an outcaste without pride or regard for time, a mind like a castrated bull without any arrogance, a mind like a servant girl without conceit, a mind like a boat that is not weary of going and coming, a mind like a bridge that perfectly fulfills the words of a spiritual friend, a mind like a virtuous son who looks to the face of his spiritual friend, and a mind like a young king who does not transgress the commands of the king of Dharma. Son of good family, you should regard me as a sick person, regard the spiritual friend as a doctor, regard the instructions as medicine, and regard diligent practice as nursing the illness. Son of good family, you should regard me as a traveler, regard the spiritual friend as a guide, regard the instructions as the path, and regard diligence as traveling safely to the destination. Son of good family, you should regard me as one who wishes to cross to the other shore, regard the spiritual friend as a listener, regard the subsequent teachings as non-Buddhists, and regard diligence as a boat. Son of good family, you should regard me as a farmer, regard the spiritual friend as the king of nagas, regard the instructions as rain, and regard diligence as the ripening of crops. Son of good family, you should regard me as a poor person, regard the spiritual friend as a benefactor, regard the instructions as wealth and meaning, and regard diligence as eliminating poverty. Towards the virtuous friend, generate the thought of a hero; towards the instructions, generate the thought of weapons; and towards diligence, generate the thought of dispelling enemies. Son of good family, you should generate the thought of a merchant towards me. Towards the virtuous friend, generate the thought of a boatman; towards the instructions, generate the thought of jewels; and towards diligence, generate the thought of collecting jewels. Son of good family, you should generate the thought of an excellent son towards me. Towards the virtuous friend, generate the thought of parents; towards following the teachings, generate the thought of the conduct of a son of good family; and towards diligence, generate the thought of not losing the conduct. Son of good family, you should generate the thought of a young king towards me. Towards the virtuous friend, generate the thought of a Dharma king and virtuous ministers; towards the instructions, generate the thought of the king's laws; and towards diligence, generate the thought of the wisdom king's crown and ornaments, as well as binding the head with the means of Dharma, and the thought of viewing the city of the Dharma king. Son of good family, thus, bodhisattvas who have a completely pure superior intention towards virtuous friends, when receiving all the instructions of virtuous friends, like grass and moss relying on a snowy mountain, as well as medicine and forests, all roots of virtue will increase. Just as the great ocean becomes a container of water, it will become a container of all dharmas. Just as the Ganges great ocean becomes a source of many jewels, it will become a source of all qualities. Just as gold is completely refined by the heat of a mine, the mind of enlightenment will be completely purified. Just as Mount Meru rises from the great ocean, it will transcend the world. Just as one does not associate with bad people, one does not associate with all evil deeds. Like the waxing moon, one will increase with pure Dharma. In short, sons of good family, Bodhisattvas who have entered the teachings of a virtuous spiritual friend will fully grasp ten times the countless hundreds of thousands of billions of qualities. Their superior intentions, ten times the countless hundreds of thousands of billions, will be completely purified. The powers of the Bodhisattva, ten times the countless hundreds of thousands of billions, will increase. Countless hundreds of thousands of billions of obstructing dharmas will be completely purified. One will truly transcend countless hundreds of thousands of billions of maras. One will enter countless hundreds of thousands of billions of Dharma doors. The doors of perfectly pure accumulations, ten times the countless hundreds of thousands of billions, will be completely perfected. Countless hundreds of thousands of billions of practices will be completely purified. Countless hundreds of thousands of billions of great aspirations will be accomplished. Sons of good family, in short, all the practices of the Bodhisattva, all the perfections of the Bodhisattva, all the grounds of the Bodhisattva, all the entrances into the patience of the Bodhisattva, all the doors of the samadhis of the Bodhisattva, all the transformations manifested by the wisdom of the Bodhisattva's higher knowledge, all the appearances of the Bodhisattva's dharanis and fearlessness, all the immeasurable wisdom of dedication and higher knowledge of the Bodhisattva, all the accomplishments of the Bodhisattva's aspirations, and all the Buddha dharmas, will be obtained and perfected, all of which are due to the virtuous spiritual friend.
