They did not truly describe the transformations of the earth. Those who, in the past, while wandering in samsara, did not encourage sentient beings towards the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. They did not properly establish the generation of the mind of enlightenment in the minds of others. They did not enter in order to not cut off the lineage of the Tathagatas. They did not strive to completely gather all sentient beings. They did not properly encourage the Bodhisattvas towards the perfections. Those who, in the past, while wandering in samsara, did not focus on the ground of wisdom that is particularly superior to all beings. They did not accumulate the roots of virtue that would lead to becoming all-knowing. They did not fully accomplish the transcendental roots of virtue of the Tathagatas. They did not comprehend the supernormal knowledge of transformation in all the completely pure Buddha-fields. They did not comprehend the roots of virtue that are to be observed by the path of the eyes of the Bodhisattvas, the transcendental, uncommon enlightenment, and the great aspirations of the Bodhisattvas. The Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas did not comprehend the uncommon objects observed by the wisdom eye of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, which arise from the blessings of the Tathagatas and are established by the nature of illusion. The Bodhisattvas, who completely hold various concepts through blessings, and who greatly increase the power of joy of the Bodhisattvas, did not comprehend. Therefore, the chief pairs of great Shravakas, the good pairs, and so forth, do not see the transformations of the Tathagatas. They do not hear. They do not know. They do not comprehend. They do not realize. They do not perceive. They do not believe. They do not think. They do not observe. They do not regard as realization. They do not definitely think. They do not nearly think. Why is that? Because that is the realm of the Buddhas, not the realm of the Shravakas. Therefore,

Those great Shravakas, even though dwelling in the Jeta Grove itself, did not see the various manifestations of the Buddha, because they did not have the roots of virtue corresponding to it. They did not see the various manifestations of the Buddha because they did not have such a pure eye of wisdom. They did not have such samadhi to enter into great blessings with a small object. They could not know, see, understand, realize, extensively fill, enter, observe, experience, suppress, completely suppress, be heard by others, be instructed, be spoken, be correctly instructed, be established, be given, or completely encourage beings, combine, rejoice greatly, or make beings rejoice in the Dharma nature of the Buddha's manifestations, because they did not have such liberation. They did not have such miraculous powers, such excellent strength, such power, such dominion, such a place, such awareness, such power of the eye, such wisdom. Why is that? Because they have come from the Shravaka Vehicle in such a way, completely accomplished by the Shravaka path, the mandala of Shravaka conduct is completely perfected, abiding in the fruit of the Shravaka, having ascertained realization by knowing the appearing truth, abiding at the correct limit, having reached the ultimate end of extreme peace, without the thought of great compassion, not looking at or dwelling in all the realms of the world, they are those who have accomplished their own benefit. They gathered and dwelt in that very Jeta Grove, in front of the Blessed One, to the left and right, and on the sides, visibly gazing at the Blessed One, but they did not see the various manifestations of the Buddha in the Jeta Grove. Why is that? Because they have not correctly cultivated the all-knowing wisdom, have not correctly accumulated the all-knowing wisdom, have not correctly entered into the all-knowing wisdom, and have not made correct aspirations for the all-knowing wisdom.

Those who have not sown, have not manifested the wisdom of omniscience, have not fully cultivated the wisdom of omniscience, and have not practiced the wisdom of omniscience, cannot enter and realize the transformation of the Tathagata's samadhi, nor can they see and understand it. What is the reason for this? This is seen by the path of the eyes of those Bodhisattvas who possess lineage, not by the eyes of the Hearers. Therefore, even though those great Hearers were dwelling in the Jeta Grove, they did not see the transformation of the Tathagata, the blessings of the Buddha, the pure Buddha-field, and the assembly of Bodhisattvas. For example, on the near and far banks of the great Ganges River, there are hungry ghosts tormented by hunger and thirst, naked and without clothes, their bodies withered in color and complexion, dried by the wind and sun, pecked by many crows, gnawed by jackals and foxes, hundreds and thousands gathered together, but they do not see the great Ganges River. Because they are obscured by the obscuring karma, some see it as dried up and without water, and some see it as completely filled with dust. Similarly, even though those great Hearer elders were dwelling in the Jeta Grove, because their eyes were covered by the darkness of ignorance, which is not in accordance with omniscience, and because they were not fully supported by the power of the roots of virtue of the ground of omniscience, they did not see or know those transformations of the Tathagata. For example, in the midst of a great assembly of many people, someone is intoxicated by sleep and becomes deluded. In that dream of sleep-induced delusion, he sees in that very place the city of the gods, the abode of Indra, beautiful to behold, the summit of Mount Meru with trees, surrounded by enclosures of edible trees, filled with hundreds of thousands of billions of celestial maidens, inhabited by hundreds of thousands of billions of celestial sons, filled with various kinds of celestial flowers, and wish-fulfilling trees with celestial garments and pearl necklaces, and jewels.
