The great Bodhisattva said, 'One should comprehend the speech of the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas.' After saying this, the great Bodhisattva Samantabhadra spoke thus to the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, the auspicious one born into the lineage of the Tathāgata: 'Noble son, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva should know that the speech of the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, expands and pervades with immeasurable wheels of sound, therefore it should be known as all-pervading. In order to manifest the teaching of the Dharma, it should be known that it satisfies all sentient beings according to their thoughts. Because it brings extreme satisfaction to the mind, it should be known that it delights all retinues according to their desires. Because it does not deviate from time, it should be known that it arrives as time dictates, without separation. Because it is like an echo, it should be known that it is extremely unborn and unceasing. Because all accumulations of karma are perfected, it should be known that it is without a master. Because it is unfathomable, it should be known that it is extremely profound. Because of attachment to the realm of Dharma, it should be known that it is ultimately ungrounded. Because of truly entering into the nature of Dharma, it should be known that it is continuous. Because it is extremely ultimate, it should be known that it is without support.' One should know that the speech of the Tathāgata is neither with a master nor without a master, neither with discrimination nor without discrimination. Why is that? Noble son, for example, when a world is destroyed, because of obtaining the nature of Dharma, four great sounds of great sound will arise, and they have no master and no grasping. What are the four? Noble son, when a world is destroyed, such a first great sound will arise: 'Alas, friends, the first dhyana is without desire and without malice, extremely blissful, and is the cause for truly transcending the desire realm.' Sentient beings hear this sound.

Having cultivated the first dhyana, one transcends the desire realm and is born in the world of Brahma. Then, having attained the Dharma-nature, the second great sound arises, namely: O friends, this second dhyana is without conceptualization and without investigation, it is extremely blissful, and it becomes the cause for truly transcending the gods of the Brahma host. Having heard that sound, sentient beings also cultivate the second dhyana, and having transcended the world of Brahma, they are born together with the gods of Abhasvara. Then, having thoroughly attained the Dharma-nature, the third great sound arises, namely: O friends, this third dhyana is without joy and is extremely blissful, and it becomes the cause for truly transcending the gods of Abhasvara. Having heard that sound, sentient beings also cultivate the third dhyana, and having transcended the gods of Abhasvara, they are born together with the gods of Subhakrtsna. Then, having thoroughly attained the Dharma-nature, the fourth great sound arises, namely: O friends, this fourth dhyana is extremely peaceful, and it becomes the cause for truly transcending the gods of Subhakrtsna. Having heard that sound, sentient beings also cultivate the fourth dhyana, and having transcended the gods of Subhakrtsna, they are born together with the gods of Brhatphala. O sons of the Victorious One, thus, when the world realm is about to be destroyed, having thoroughly attained the Dharma-nature, those four great sounds will arise, and although there is no lord or speaker in them, such sounds endowed with immeasurable qualities will arise. O sons of the Victorious One, likewise, there is no lord in the speech of the Tathagata, there is no speaker, there is no sender, there is no receiver, there is no giver. However, having attained the Dharma-nature of the Tathagata, four great sounds will arise, what are the four? They are as follows: Having attained the Dharma-nature of the Tathagata, one great sound will arise, namely: Alas, these conditioned things are suffering, the hell of sentient beings is suffering, the birth place of animals is suffering, the world of Yama is suffering, merit

The uncreated is suffering! Grasping as mine is suffering! Engaging in sinful actions is suffering. In order to be born in the heavens and among humans, cultivate roots of virtue! Protect the noble birthplaces! Abandon births in unfavorable conditions! Having heard that sound, may beings diligently strive without error, may they diligently strive without error, and may they fully practice virtue. Having entered into the diligence of practicing virtue, they will abandon births in unfavorable conditions, and will also fully grasp the birthplaces of being born in the heavens and among humans. Then, having fully attained the Dharma-nature of the Tathagata, the second great sound of great sound arises: Alas! These conditioned phenomena are extremely painful, blazing, universally blazing, intensely blazing, like an iron ball, are impermanent and of the nature of change. The uncreated is peaceful, without suffering, cool, completely free from suffering. Having heard that sound, may beings strive diligently in virtuous Dharma, and by striving thus, in the Hearer Vehicle, they will attain the forbearance of following sound. Then, having attained the Dharma-nature of the Tathagata, the third great sound of great sound arises: Alas! This Hearer Vehicle is extremely small, following the sound of others, there is a vehicle higher than this, namely, to become fully enlightened by oneself, without a teacher, there is the Solitary Realizer Vehicle. Having heard that sound, may beings of great faith diligently strive in the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, abandoning the Hearer Vehicle, and enter into the Bodhi of the Solitary Realizer. Then, having fully attained the Dharma-nature of the Tathagata, the fourth great sound of great sound arises: Alas! There is the Great Vehicle that transcends the Hearer and Solitary Realizer Vehicles, corresponding to the conduct of Bodhisattvas, the six perfections, the conduct of Bodhi is uninterrupted, the mind of Bodhi is never abandoned, sustained by immeasurable accumulations of merit and wisdom. The Hearer Vehicle is following the sound of others. The Solitary Realizer Vehicle is extremely small. The Great Vehicle is
