enters. He thoroughly contemplates and examines all dharmas with such a nature, thinking in accordance and not acting in discordance. Therefore, the bodhisattva obtains sharp endurance with the sixth bhumi's conforming endurance. However, he has not yet obtained the manifestation of endurance for unborn dharmas. When he contemplates the nature of all dharmas in this way, he is even more preceded by great compassion, and relying on great compassion, he observes the arising and destruction of the world in order to perfect great compassion. When he observes the arising and destruction of the world, he thinks: All the births that wander in the world arise from the manifestation of clinging to self. If one is separated from the manifestation of clinging to self, then birth will not arise either. Those of childish intellect who are obscured by the darkness of not knowing the manifestation of clinging to self, who have faith in existence and non-existence, who are devoted to inappropriate attention, who are extremely engaged in the unreal, and who follow the wrong path, accumulate meritorious and non-meritorious actions. The seeds of consciousness with outflows, together with grasping, which are cultivated by these actions, are close to the manifestation of future birth, old age, death, and the continuation of sentient beings. Thus, the basis of the field of karma, the darkness of ignorance, the oil of desire, and the appearance of views moistened by the pride of 'I' increase greatly, so the sprout of name and form arises, and after arising, it grows. After the sprout of name and form grows, the five faculties arise. After the five faculties arise, they gather and meet each other, and touch arises. When touch gathers, feeling arises. After feeling, craving arises due to manifest longing. Craving causes grasping to increase. When grasping increases, existence arises. After existence arises, the five aggregates arise. After the five aggregates arise, they gradually increase in the continuum of the five paths. After increasing, they separate. Because of increasing and separating, there is unhappiness and complete suffering.

Alas! Due to displeasure and utter grief, sorrow and lamentation arise, as well as suffering, discomfort, and confusion. Yet, no thing arises from them. Even though things that are self-existent and spontaneously accomplished will perish, no one causes them to perish. Thus, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva thoroughly contemplates dependent origination in accordance with the proper manner. He thinks thus: Not truly manifesting knowledge is truly ignorance. The maturation of actions done by ignorance is the formations. The first consciousness abiding in the formations is consciousness. Consciousness and the four aggregates of grasping that arise simultaneously are name and form. The increase of name and form is the six sense bases. The meeting of the three—faculty, object, and consciousness—together with defilements is contact. What arises from contact is feeling. Attachment to feeling is craving. The increase of craving is grasping. The action arising from grasping, together with defilements, is existence. The result corresponding to action and cause is birth. Birth is the arising of the aggregates. The complete maturation of the aggregates is aging. The disintegration of the aggregates after aging is death. At the time of death and separation, the utter grief of the mind that is fond and attached is sorrow. The verbal expression arising from sorrow is lamentation. What is experienced by the five faculties is suffering. What is experienced by the mind's observation is discomfort. The arising of many sufferings and discomforts is confusion. Thus, the great heap of suffering and the tree of suffering, without an agent or experiencer, will manifestly be established. He thinks thus: Due to manifest attachment to an agent, actions come to exist. Where there is no agent, action is not seen in reality. He thinks thus: Thus, the three realms are only mind. The twelve branches of existence that the Tathāgata has fully explained, all of those abide in a single mind. Why is that? For any thing

Now, the mind that arises with attachment is consciousness. Things are formations. Being ignorant of formations is ignorance. What arises together with the mind of ignorance is name and form. The complete growth of name and form is the six sense sources. What is related to the six sense sources is contact. What arises together with contact is feeling. Being unsatisfied with feeling is craving. Being tormented by craving, accumulating and not abandoning is grasping. These that produce the limb of existence are existence. The arising of existence is birth. The complete ripening of birth is aging. Separation from aging is death. Therefore, ignorance abides in two functions, that is, it makes sentient beings ignorant of the object. It also produces the cause for the manifestation of formations. Formations also abide in two functions, that is, they manifest the future ripening. They also produce the cause for the manifestation of consciousness. Consciousness also abides in two functions, that is, it connects the continuity of existence. It also produces the cause for the manifestation of name and form. Name and form also abide in two functions, that is, they also depend on each other. They also produce the cause for the manifestation of the six sense sources. The six sense sources also abide in two functions, that is, they also show their respective objects. They also produce the cause for the manifestation of contact. Contact also abides in two functions, that is, it also touches the object. It also produces the cause for the manifestation of feeling. Feeling also abides in two functions, that is, it also produces pleasant, unpleasant, and neither feelings. It also produces the cause for the manifestation of craving. Craving also abides in two functions, that is, it also produces attachment to things that will cause attachment. It also produces the cause for the manifestation of grasping. Grasping also abides in two functions, that is, it also binds with all afflictions. It also produces the cause for the manifestation of existence. Existence also abides in two functions
