I generate the mind of enlightenment. In order to cut off all thoughts, habits, and the entire net of afflictions of cyclic existence, Bodhisattvas generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. O son of the king, behold those various examples of afflictions! O son of the king, here, if a certain person is born, then, by means of the one mind of enlightenment that he generates, together with sentient beings belonging to immeasurable world realms, in the eastern direction, immeasurable Buddhas, Bhagavat, immeasurable excellent delicacies, immeasurable incense, clothing, umbrellas, victory banners, pennants, palaces, canopies, immeasurable abodes, immeasurable networks of jewels, immeasurable lion thrones, jewel ornaments, immeasurable streamers, are to be pleased with immeasurable forms of offerings. For immeasurable eons, they attend and revere, perform service and respect, pay homage with prostrations and offerings, praise with their heads touching the ground, circumambulate and gaze upon their faces. To each and every Tathagata, that person and those other beings belonging to immeasurable world realms, with great devotion, light countless lamps. Just as that person does, so too those sentient beings fill those many world realms with immeasurable jewels such as jewels, various lights, wish-fulfilling kings, lights that illuminate all directions, the light of flames, the light that is difficult to overcome, the light of the moon in water, jewel ornaments, victory banners of merit, wish-fulfilling jewels, and so forth, and offer them. Likewise, flowers, garlands, incense, unguents, powders, clothing, umbrellas, victory banners, pennants, palaces, canopies, the sounds of cymbals and musical instruments, songs, networks of jewels, networks of gold, networks of precious stones, networks of bells, lion thrones, and likewise a vast Buddha offering is created, and those Tathagatas reside therein.

When tending trees, offering in such a manner, even after nirvana, that person and all beings belonging to immeasurable realms, for each Tathagata, also build stupas as vast and extensive as immeasurable realms, constructed from immeasurable jewels, adorned with ornaments and immeasurable jewels. Just like one stupa, similarly for countless immeasurable stupas. The quantity of all is just that much. In each stupa, there are also countless images of the Tathagata, and many realms are filled with light. In such ways, offering to the Tathagata and fully proclaiming the merits of service. Also making offerings to those who have fully attained nirvana. Even if immeasurable kalpas are exhausted, it will not be exhausted. Just as in the east, so too in the south, west, north, northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest, below, above, and in all ten directions, it is vast and extensive. If ten people go ahead, and each person faces ten directions, then, O sons of the Victorious Ones, what do you think? Will those people and the immeasurable human realms belonging to them increase a great accumulation of merit because of that? They replied: O sons of the Victorious Ones, that is only comprehended by the Buddha wisdom of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. They said: O sons of the Victorious Ones, how much is the accumulation of merit of a Bodhisattva who generates the first thought, compared to the accumulation of merit arising from pleasing the Buddhas, making offerings and service for immeasurable kalpas? The former does not even approach one part in a hundred, one part in a thousand, one part in a hundred thousand, one part in a million. Number, part, count, example, and cause cannot even approach. O sons of the Victorious Ones, let alone the previous examples. O sons of the Victorious Ones, regarding this

Then a second son was born. With just one thought of enlightenment, he equaled the first son and all the sentient beings belonging to immeasurable worlds, who had offered to the Buddhas for immeasurable kalpas and manifestly attended to them with reverence. In this way, each thought of enlightenment pleased them. Together with all the sentient beings belonging to the immeasurable worlds in the eastern direction, they pleased the Buddha, the Bhagavan, immeasurably. Likewise, as it was said at the beginning, the second is inconceivable, the third is countless, the fourth is incomprehensible, the fifth is incomparable, the sixth is universally infinite, the seventh is endless, the eighth is without boundaries, and the ninth is immeasurable. O princes, let those previous examples be! O princes, here a tenth son was born. With just one thought of enlightenment of this tenth son, it equaled those previous nine sons and those sentient beings belonging to ten immeasurable worlds, who had offered to the Buddhas for inconceivable kalpas and pleased them with reverence. In this way, each thought of enlightenment pleased them. Together with all the sentient beings belonging to the inexpressible worlds in the eastern direction, they pleased the Buddha, the Bhagavan, inexpressibly with offerings called "the supreme of delicious foods, the inexpressible." O princes, the accumulation of merit from a bodhisattva's first thought of enlightenment is far greater than the accumulation of merit from offering to the Buddhas and attending to them with reverence for inexpressible kalpas, not even approaching a hundredth part. Why is that? O princes, it is because bodhisattvas, great beings, do not generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment merely for the sake of offering to and attending to the birth of just one Buddha, or merely for the sake of those items for offering to the Buddhas.
