The earth split open by the power of the great man's glory of merit, and came before the Bodhisattva, unable to move even a corner of his robe. Then, coming to destroy with water, thinking to kill, a great rain fell and remained. By that power, hundreds and thousands of layers piled up from above, and great clouds of thousands of layers gathered and rained. The force of the rain was enough to erode the earth. The great rain clouds above the forests and trees came, but could not wet the great Bodhisattva with even a single drop of water. Then, summoning a rain of stones, turning the largest mountain piles into smoke and burning them, descending from the sky, and coming before the Bodhisattva, showers of divine flowers fell. Then, summoning all the rain of weapons, turning single-edged and double-edged swords, short spears, razors, and other weapons into smoke and burning them, descending from the sky, and coming before the Bodhisattva, they turned into divine flowers. Then, summoning a rain of coal, coal the color of cuckoo flowers descended from the sky, and at the feet of the Bodhisattva, it turned into divine flowers and fell. Then, summoning the rain of ashes, extremely warm, flame-colored ashes descended from the sky, and at the feet of the Bodhisattva, rain fell like sandalwood powder. Then, summoning the rain of sand, turning the extremely fine sand into smoke and burning it, descending from the sky, and at the feet of the Bodhisattva, rain fell like heavenly powder. Then, summoning the rain of clay, turning the clay into smoke and burning it, descending from the sky, and at the feet of the Bodhisattva, it fell like heavenly ointment. Then, in this way, to frighten, in order to make Dondup (Siddhartha) flee, darkness was made to approach. That was a great darkness composed of four limbs, coming before the Bodhisattva, disappearing like the sun's light dispelling darkness, and in this way, these nine demons are wind, rain, stones, weapons, and

Dust, ashes, sand, clay, and darkness. These fell like rain but could not make the Bodhisattva flee. What more to say, why stay? Calling his attendants, he said, "Strike this youth, drive him away!" He himself mounted the elephant at the foot of the mountain, raised the wheel-like weapon, and approached the Bodhisattva, saying, "Gautama, rise from your seat! This seat does not belong to you, it belongs to me." Hearing his words, the great being spoke thus: "Mara, you have not perfected the ten perfections, have not perfected the near perfections, have not perfected the ultimate perfections, have not completely abandoned the five great ones, have not acted for the sake of relatives, have not acted for the sake of the world, have not perfected the conduct of the Buddhas, so this seat does not belong to you. This seat belongs to me alone." Mara became enraged and could not restrain the force of his anger, and he hurled the wheel-like weapon at the great being. As he contemplated the ten perfections and sat, the rain from above turned into a garland of flowers, like a hanging curtain. He hurled the other wheel-like weapons with great anger, those weapons that could pierce thick stones or thick stone pillars. When those weapons again became his garland of flowers and remained there, the remaining Maras thought to rise from their seats and leave, and they hurled huge mountains. As the great being contemplated the ten perfections and sat, those mountains turned into bouquets of flowers and fell to the ground. The gods who were seated around the perimeter craned their necks to look, constantly craning their necks, wondering if the body of the excellent youth Gautama had been harmed, and what they were doing. So they pondered and watched. Then, the great being said that a Bodhisattva who has perfected the perfections is worthy of the seat on which he attains perfect enlightenment. He said to the seated Mara, "Mara, who is the witness of your giving?" Mara said: These...
