The Basis of the Generations of Births. The Basis of the Generations of Births. In Indian language: Jātaka Nidānaṃ. In Tibetan language: The Basis of the Generations of Births. Homage to the noble Three Jewels! When the Blessed One was residing in the Jetavana Grove of Anāthapiṇḍika in Rājagṛha, the great elder Donmthong went to the Blessed One, prostrated, circumambulated, and sat down on one side. He then spoke to the Blessed One, saying: "Venerable one, I wish to hear the Dharma of the lineage of the Buddha, the Blessed One." The Blessed One replied: "Donmthong, keep it in mind, and I will tell it." Here, the collector praises the meaning of the Basis of the Generations of Births of those who have the wisdom of perfect discernment and the peaceful Arhats. The long basis, the intermediate basis, and the near basis. Having seen these three bases, which praise should one listen to? First, one should understand the complete divisions of those bases. Here at the feet of Dipankara, a great-minded person made a prayer. The path from abandoning the body of the All-Savior until the Dharma talk of being born in the realm of Tushita is called the long basis. From the time of descending from the realm of Tushita until obtaining omniscience at the Bodhi tree, until the Dharma talk, this is called the intermediate basis. Entering into whatever and obtaining whatever, these are called the near basis. Here, the so-called long basis begins from four immeasurable kalpas and one hundred thousand kalpas ago, and a city called Fearless Abode appeared. There lived a Brahmin named Excellent Wisdom. Both his father and mother entered into a noble lineage, and for seven generations, there was no dispute, accusation, or slander from others, and they were completely pure. He was a handsome man, pleasing to the eye, extremely beautiful, and possessed the best complexion. He did not engage in other occupations but only studied the Brahmin's profession. When he was a young boy, both his father and mother passed away. Then, his enjoyment...

Then the minister took the inventory of the wealth, opened the storehouses filled with gold, silver, jewels, pearls, and so on, and said: "These are the possessions of the mothers of these young men. These are the possessions of the fathers. These are the possessions of the grandfathers and great-grandfathers. This is the wealth of seven generations." He said this so that they would each be supported separately. The wise Good Intellect thought: "Taking these possessions, my father and grandfathers, etc., did not take even a single grain of gold when they went to the next world. I should understand what I myself will take." Then he told the king, proclaimed music in the city, gave everything away to everyone, and then renounced and became an ascetic. To clarify this further, Good Intellect told this story in this place. It is not just this, but it also tells of the Buddha's lineage never being interrupted, but if it is told bound by verses, it is difficult to understand, so it will be explained with verses in between. Starting from four countless eons and one hundred thousand eons more, ten sounds continuously appeared in the city of Fearless Possession. That is the narration of the Buddha's lineage. Four countless eons and, One hundred thousand eons are extra. The city called Fearless Possession, Seeing it makes one happy. Fourteen sounds never cease, Food and drink are very abundant. There, the ten sounds that never cease are: the sound of elephants, the sound of horses, the sound of vehicles, the sound of music, the sound of the musical instrument mṛdaṃga (藏文,梵文天城体,mṛdaṃga,drum), the sound of the lute, the sound of songs, the sound of the musical instrument samma (藏文,梵文天城体,samma,a kind of cymbal), the sound of cymbals, and the sound of laughing, drinking, and eating. These ten sounds never cease. Gathering those sounds together: The sound of elephants and the sound of horses, Conch music and the sound of vehicles, Eating and drinking are right there, And the sound of eating and drinking. After saying this verse about the Buddha's lineage: The city possesses branches and leaves, All desires are very close, Possesses the seven jewels, All kinds of people
