Thus. Not far from the snowy mountains, in a place called "Dharma Mountain," I relied on that place to the utmost, and skillfully built a leaf house. Walking there, I abandoned the five faults, fully possessed eight virtues, and possessed the power of clairvoyance. Possessing nine faults, I abandoned myself there, wearing clothes made of bark, possessing twelve virtues. Possessing eight faults, having abandoned the leaf house, I lived near the tree, possessing ten virtues. The grains that were plowed and built were all abandoned without remainder, possessing all virtues, and first eating the best tree fruits. Having practiced asceticism there, in the places of sitting and walking, within just seven days, I obtained the power of clairvoyance. What is said here is that the leaf house and walking relied upon by the wise and virtuous are like what one has done with one's own hands. Here, the meaning is that the great-hearted one came from the snowy mountains, and seeing that he came to Dharma Mountain today, the lord of the gods, Indra, said to the sons of the gods of various affairs, this wise and virtuous one wants to renounce, go, use these places, and after hearing his words, he joyfully built a beautiful leaf house in the cave as a place to walk. The Blessed One also at that time, I thought and was accustomed to completeness, therefore at this time, for this reason, Shariputra, in that Dharma Mountain, the good dwelling was made by me, possessing a beautiful leaf house, walking and dwelling there, I abandoned the five faults. So it is said. What are the five faults of walking? Hard and uneven, with trees entangled inside, dense forest and very narrow, and very wide. When walking on hard and uneven ground, blisters will grow on the feet, the mind cannot dwell in one place, and the place for doing things cannot be accomplished. Walking on flat and soft ground is comfortable, and the place for doing things is complete. Therefore, the hot and uneven ground should be known as one fault. When there are trees in the middle, inside, and at the end of walking, when walking back and forth carelessly, the forehead and
