Thus, it was specially narrated, proclaiming and greatly desiring to renounce. Thinking, 'I will surely depart with a great renunciation from today,' I arose from my bed, approached the door, and asked, 'Who is here?' Minister Desire was sleeping with the threshold as his pillow. The noble son said, 'I am Minister Desire.' He said, 'Now I wish to depart with a great renunciation. Saddle one of my horses.' He replied, 'Very well, Lord.' Saying this, he took the saddle, went to the stable, lit a butter lamp with the good fragrance of sesame oil, and under a silk canopy adorned with Sumana flowers, he saw the king of horses, Praised, dwelling in a very delightful place. Now knowing that I should saddle this one, I saddled Praised. Knowing that it was being saddled, it held its breath when being saddled. 'On other days, when going to the garden to play, it was never saddled like this.' Thinking, 'My noble son, now desires to depart with a great renunciation!' Because of joy in his heart, he emitted a hissing horse sound, which spread throughout the entire city, but the gods again blocked that sound, so that no one could hear it. The Bodhisattva also sent Minister Desire to the stable, thinking to look at his son for a moment. He went to the abode of Fame-Holder, opened the door, and immediately in the bedroom, lit a butter lamp with the good fragrance of sesame oil. Fame-Holder was sleeping on a bed strewn with Sumana flowers and jasmine flowers, etc., about a load's worth, with her hand placed on her son's head. The Bodhisattva stood with one foot on the threshold of the door, looking. Thinking, 'If I pull the goddess's hand and wake my son, the goddess will awaken, and I will be prevented from leaving; after becoming a Buddha, I will look at my son,' he descended from the palace. Again, some teachers say this: At that time, the Bodhisattva was born seven days before his departure. Because there is no other such statement, therefore only this one should be accepted. Thus it is.

The Bodhisattva descended from the palace and went to the stable, saying: "Son Kanthaka, now deliver one night! I, through your kindness, having become a Buddha, will deliver all the worlds, including the gods." Then he mounted Kanthaka's back, holding onto Kanthaka's neck. Kanthaka was sixteen cubits long from mouth to muzzle, possessed a height commensurate with that, endowed with power and speed, and entirely white, like the color of a conch shell that has been polished. If it were to make a "tsher tsher" sound or the sound of hooves, the entire city would hear it. Therefore, by the power of the gods themselves, they prevented it from making such a sound, so that no one could hear it. As it walked, each hoof of its legs was placed near the palm of the god's hand. The Bodhisattva sat in the center of the horse's back. The minister Chandaka, saying "Hold onto the horse's tail," approached the great gate at midnight. At that time, the great king had again decreed that no matter when the Bodhisattva was, he could not open the gate of the great city to go outside, but that each leaf of the half-gate had to be opened by thousands of people. The Bodhisattva, endowed with strength, possessed the strength of ten trillion elephants. In terms of the number of people, he possessed the strength of one hundred trillion people. The Bodhisattva thought: "If the gate is not opened, now, while riding on Kanthaka's back, with the minister Chandaka holding onto the tail, I will squeeze Kanthaka's thighs and jump over the sixteen-cubit-high wall," he thought. The minister Chandaka thought: "If the gate is not opened, I will carry the noble son in my arms, and with my right hand, I will put Kanthaka's belly under my armpit and jump over the wall," he thought. Kanthaka thought: "If the gate is not opened, I will carry my master as he is riding on my back, and at the same time, with the minister Chandaka holding onto the tail, I will carry them together and jump over the wall," he thought. If the gate were not opened, then

Thinking thus, any one of those three will surely come to pass. Again, the gatekeeper gods opened the gate. Immediately, the demon, thinking to turn back the Bodhisattva, came and, sitting in the sky, said: "Great ascetic, do not go! From here, on the seventh day, you will obtain a precious wheel. You will rule the great four continents surrounded by two thousand subcontinents. Great ascetic, turn back!" Thus he spoke. He asked, "Who are you?" He replied, "I am the lord of the world." The demon said, "I know that the precious wheel will come to me, and I have no need of a king. I will proclaim in the ten thousand world realms that I will become a Buddha." The demon said, "From this point on, whether it is a thought of desire, or a thought of malice, or a thought of harm, whenever such a thought arises in your mind, I will know it. I will follow you like a shadow, inseparable." The Bodhisattva, even having obtained the kingship of a wheel-turning monarch, discarded it without looking back, like spitting out ashes, and with great reverence, he departed from the city. On the fifteenth of the middle summer month, when the constellation was at its most auspicious time, he departed, thinking to look back at the city once more. Thus, as soon as this thought arose in the Bodhisattva's mind, it was said, 'Great being, have you not done the merit of looking back?' As he said this, the great earth turned over like a potter's wheel. The Bodhisattva, having previously faced and sat towards the city, looked at the city and indicated in that place a worthy and praiseworthy stupa of looking back. The worthy one, having manifestly turned towards the path of going, proceeded forward. He was endowed with great reverence, glory, and good fortune. At that time, the gods lit sixty thousand great lamps before him. And behind him, they also lit sixty thousand great lamps.
