Therefore it is said: If you protect according to the Dharma, it is Dharma practice. If you are liberated by the Dharma, you will obtain it according to the Dharma. If you are well liberated, it is the benefit of the Dharma. Dharma practice does not lead to evil destinies. The result of this action is that the light of that Bhagavan's body pervades and abides in ten thousand worlds. At that time, we were Brahmins called Bodhisattvas of Extreme Greed. In order to invite the Teacher, he went before him, and after hearing the wonderful Dharma teachings, he asked the venerable ones to come to my house for alms tomorrow. The Brahmin asked, "How many monks are needed?" He replied, "How many monks do you have with your retinue?" At that time, the Teacher's first assembly was only that much, so it was said that there were hundreds of thousands of kotis. Please, venerable ones, come to my house with all your retinue for alms tomorrow. After the Bhagavan agreed, the Brahmin thought about preparing for tomorrow, and went to the house thinking: I can offer these monks food, clothing, and other things. He also thought: Where should they stay? If he stayed on the red lotus throne of the King of Gods, which is located above 84,000 yojanas, he would feel warm. Indra thought: Who wants to abandon my seat? Looking with his divine eye, he saw that great being, and that the extremely greedy Brahmin was inviting the Tathagata and other monks, and was also thinking about a place to stay. I should also go there and take a share of the merit, so he transformed into the form of a carpenter, holding an axe and adze, and stood before the great being, saying: Who will hire me to work? The great being looked at him and asked, "What kind of work can you do?" He replied, "There is nothing I cannot do. I can build houses, dwellings, or do some repairs." The Bodhisattva said: Therefore, I have something to do. Tomorrow I will invite the Sangha of hundreds of thousands of kotis of noble monks.

To! Can a place be made for them to dwell? He replied, "I can do it." Can you give me wages? "Child, I can." "Good," he said, and it was done well. Then he went and looked at a place, and within a range of twelve or thirteen yojanas, he leveled one side like a blue mandala. He thought, "For the dwelling of these, I will bring forth from underground a dwelling made of the seven precious substances," and he looked. Immediately, the ground broke open and the dwelling was completed. It was made of pillars of gold, with capitals of silver, and beams of gold above. The jewel pillars had the nature of coral. The coral pillars had the nature of jewels. The pillars made of the seven precious substances had capitals made of the seven precious substances themselves. Then, he looked at the nets of bells hanging between the dwellings, and as soon as he looked, the nets hung down. When the wind moved them, the music of the five instruments, like a harp, resounded, like the singing of the gods. He thought of hanging strings of incense and strings of flowers in between, and the strings hung down. He thought that cushions and backrests for hundreds of thousands of monks of the sangha would arise from the earth. Immediately, they appeared on the ground. He thought that in each of the corners, a large water pot would appear. Those large water pots appeared. All of them transformed and went to the Brahmin, and reported, "Noble one, please come here and see the dwelling. You should also give me wages." Having said this, the great man departed, and having seen the dwelling, immediately Indra became invisible. Just by seeing it, his whole body was filled with five colors, and joy radiated continuously. Then, having seen the dwelling, he thought in this way: "This dwelling was not built by a human being. But because of my superior intention and my realization of merit, surely Indra's seat has become warm, and so Indra, the king of the gods, has made this dwelling." Then, he thought again, "In such a beautiful dwelling, in just one day

Giving alms is not my way of doing things. I thought of giving for seven days. No matter how much external alms are given, Bodhisattvas cannot be pleased. Only when a decorated head is cut off, immaculate eyes are gouged out, and the flesh of the heart is cut or carved out and given as alms, will the Bodhisattvas be pleased. We Bodhisattvas also, in the Jataka of Śibi, bought flesh every day for the price of five khalas and gave it as alms at the four gates and in the center of the city. Even with that giving, there was no complete satisfaction. Later, when Indra, the king of the gods, came in the form of a Brahmin to beg for eyes, only by gouging out his own eyes and giving them would he be pleased. Not even the slightest pain, like the tip of a hair, would arise in his mind. Likewise, Bodhisattvas are not satisfied by giving alms. Therefore, that great being also thought that he should give alms to hundreds of thousands of millions of Sanghas of monks for seven days. So, he stayed in that place and gave alms called "Joyful Pāna" for seven days. "Joyful One" refers to filling a very large vessel with milk, placing it on a huge stove, boiling the milk until it is very thick, adding a little rice and cooking it, and then adding honey, white sugar powder, and fresh butter. This cooked food porridge is called "Joyful Pāna." If people cannot carry it, the gods will also take turns carrying it. If the place of twelve or thirteen yojanas cannot accommodate the monks, then those monks will also abide by their own power. At the end of seven days, after washing all the monks' bowls, the bowls were filled with fresh butter, ghee, honey, and water boiled with brown sugar for medicine, and the three Dharma robes were offered. The young Sangha obtained cloth for Dharma robes worth one million that the monks had obtained. The Teacher rejoiced and praised. This noble person gave great alms in this way.
