and aspiration, etc., when these eight are combined, aspirations will clearly increase. Abiding in a human body and striving for Buddhahood, then the striving will be perfectly accomplished. Even if nagas, garudas, or gods strive for it, it will not be accomplished. Having been born in a human body and possessing the characteristics of a male, then striving for it will be accomplished. If it is a female, a flesh-eating demon, a hermaphrodite, or a bisexual, then it will not be accomplished. Having become a male, in order to obtain desire and the state of an arhat in that body, it will be completely accomplished. Others will not. If one possesses illusion and strives in the presence of a living Buddha, then it will be accomplished. After the Buddha has completely passed into nirvana, striving in front of a stupa or a Bodhi tree will not be accomplished. Even if one strives in the presence of the Buddha, if one possesses the signs of ordination, it will be accomplished, but if one possesses the signs of a householder, it will not. Even if one is ordained, if one obtains the five superknowledges and the eight samadhis, one will achieve what is desired, but if one lacks these qualities, it will not. Even if one possesses qualities, if one dedicates one's living body to the Buddha, it will be accomplished, otherwise it will not. With this basis, the basis being complete, it will be accomplished. Others will not. Even if one possesses a basis, if one does it for the sake of the Buddha's teachings with great intention, great joy, great effort, and great diligence, it will be accomplished. Others will not. Regarding this, here is an example of great intention: If someone is able to, in an environment filled with water throughout the entire world, swim across to the other shore with their own hands, then they will attain Buddhahood. Or, if someone is able to, again in an environment filled with dust throughout the entire world, tread on it with their feet and turn it into dust, thereby reaching the other shore, then they will be able to attain Buddhahood. Or, if someone is able to, again in an environment filled with weapons throughout the entire world, filled completely without gaps with the tips of all the weapons pointing upwards, tread on them with their feet and reach the other shore, then they will attain Buddhahood. Again, if one could fill the world environment entirely with burning coal, and be able to tread on it and cross over, then he would attain Buddhahood. Without thinking of suffering in any of those, knowing that I will also deliver these, or go, or will go across. If he is truly endowed with such great desire, joy, diligence, and effort, then the goal he seeks will be achieved. Otherwise, it will not. The ascetic Good Intelligence again gathered these eight dharmas, made a prayer wishing for Buddhahood, and lay down. The Blessed One Dipankara also came and stood near the head of the ascetic Good Intelligence, and like showing the window of the jewel lion palace, he looked with eyes endowed with five colors, extremely clear, at the ascetic Good Intelligence lying on the clay. This ascetic is lying down making a prayer for the sake of attaining Buddhahood. Thinking whether this person's goal will be achieved or not, he contemplates and examines with future wisdom. He realizes that from now, after four countless kalpas and more than one hundred thousand kalpas, he will become a Buddha named Gautama, and prophesies within the assembly, saying: Do you see this supreme ascetic lying on the clay? They replied: Venerable one, as you say, we see him. He said: He is lying down thinking of attaining Buddhahood. They replied: Will this person's goal be achieved? He said: From now, after four countless kalpas and more than one hundred thousand kalpas have passed, he will become a Buddha named Gautama. He will again be born in the place of the city of Kapilavastu. The great goddess Maya will be his mother. King Suddhodana will be his father. The chief of the hearers will be the venerable Near Guard, and the second hearer will be the venerable Born from the Side. The Buddha's attendant will be named Ananda.
