For example, if the earth were filled with grains of sand as numerous as the Ganges River, and all those sentient beings were to make offerings with robes, alms, bedding, medicine for the sick, provisions, all things conducive to happiness, and all pleasant sensations. And that giving is done with a consciousness of signs. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, who is fully possessed of prajnaparamita and skillful means, with respect to the Buddhas, Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present, and the Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and individuals of the Hearer Vehicle, their aggregates of morality, aggregates of concentration, aggregates of wisdom, aggregates of liberation, and aggregates of the knowledge and vision of liberation, and all the roots of virtue that other sentient beings have accumulated, will accumulate, and are accumulating, all of that is gathered together, combined, measured, and completely exhausted. With respect to all that is completely exhausted, one rejoices with the most excellent rejoicing, and with the sublime, the principal, the supreme, the most supreme, the abundant, the unsurpassed, the unexcelled, the highest, the highest of the highest, the unequaled, the unequal, the equal, the extremely unequaled, the inconceivable rejoicing, one rejoices. Having rejoiced, in order to accomplish the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, which is the object of meritorious action endowed with rejoicing, may I accomplish the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and completely dedicate the meritorious action endowed with rejoicing and dedication to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Compared to the merit that those Bodhisattvas with a consciousness of signs previously accumulated, this does not even approach one part in a hundred, one part in a thousand, one part in a hundred thousand, one part in a koti, one part in a hundred kotis, one part in a thousand kotis, one part in a hundred thousand kotis, one part in a koti koti hundred thousand. It cannot even be counted, measured, shown by example, used as a basis, or used as a cause. Why is that? It is because all those Bodhisattvas give alms with a consciousness of signs.

The Eight Thousand Prajñāpāramitā Sutra, Chapter Eight. Then, the venerable Subhūti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, as you said, all the Buddhas, Blessed Ones, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and the Sangha of Śrāvakas who have appeared in the past, future, and present, and all the roots of virtue of all sentient beings, whether they have appeared in the past, future, or present, all of these are gathered, combined, measured, and completely done. For those completely done, with the supreme joy of rejoicing, and rejoicing in the supreme, the principal, the best, the most excellent, the wonderful, the supreme, the incomparable, the unsurpassed, the unsurpassed above the unsurpassed, the equal, the unequal, the same, the extremely unequal, and the inconceivable joy of rejoicing." Regarding what was said, Blessed One, how much is needed to become the supreme of rejoicing? After so informing, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhūti: "Subhūti, if a person with the Bodhisattva vehicle does not cling to the dharmas of the past, future, and present, does not become arrogant, does not focus on them, does not think about them, does not discriminate, does not correctly perceive them, and also completely understands these dharmas in this way, that all dharmas are accomplished by discrimination, are unborn, are certainly unborn, have no coming, have no going. Here, no dharma is unborn, no dharma will be born, no dharma is not born. Here, no dharma is extinguished, no dharma will be extinguished, no dharma is not extinguished. In this way, after closely examining these dharmas, one rejoices in the nature of these dharmas as they are. After rejoicing in this way, one dedicates it to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, just as it is in its nature. Subhūti, only this can make a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva become the supreme of rejoicing. Subhūti, regarding this dedication of the root of virtue, if the previous Bodhisattvas perceive it with signs, see it with signs, then those objects of merit arising from generosity
