When a past Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, how does he/she truly and completely understand all dharmas as being like dreams, up to all dharmas being like illusions? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, it is not a dream, nor is there a dreamer. It is not hearing an echo, nor is there a hearer of the echo. It is not seeing a mirage, nor is there a seer of the mirage. Similarly, it is not seeing a reflection of the moon in water, an illusion, or a magical creation, nor is there a seer of these. Why is that? Because dreams, as well as echoes, mirages, reflections of the moon in water, illusions, and magical creations, are the perverted views of ordinary people. Subhuti, an Arhat who has exhausted all defilements does not dream, nor is there a dreamer. Similarly, there is no seeing of magical creations, nor is there a seer of magical creations. Likewise, a Pratyekabuddha, a Bodhisattva, and a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha, do not dream, nor is there a dreamer, there is no seeing of magical creations, nor is there a seer of magical creations. Why is that? Subhuti, because all dharmas are unestablished and not truly existent. Then, how could a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Prajnaparamita, become an adherent to the notion of substantiality, or an adherent to the notion of complete establishment, or an adherent to the notion of true existence, or an adherent to the notion of reality? That is impossible. Why is that? If one clings to the inherent nature of any dharma, or clings to complete establishment, or clings to true existence, that is not the Prajnaparamita. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Prajnaparamita in this way, does not cling to form, nor does he/she cling to consciousness, nor does he/she cling to the desire realm, does not cling to the form realm, does not cling to the formless realm.

Likewise, he is not attached to all the dhyanas, liberations, samadhis, and attainments. He is not attached to the thirty-seven dharmas of the path to enlightenment. He is not attached to the three doors of liberation. He is not attached to the six perfections. He perfects the first bhumi, and he does not generate desire or attachment for it. Why is that? Because he does not even perceive the first bhumi, how could he generate desire and attachment for it? Similarly, he perfects up to the tenth bhumi, and he does not generate desire or attachment for it. Why is that? Because he does not perceive even the tenth bhumi, how could he generate desire and attachment for it? He also engages in the prajnaparamita, and while not perceiving the prajnaparamita, he engages in the prajnaparamita. He sees that all dharmas are contained within the prajnaparamita itself, and those dharmas are also unperceived. Why is that? Because those dharmas and the prajnaparamita are non-dual and undifferentiated. Why is that? Because there is no distinction whatsoever in all dharmas. Because the dharmadhatu is shown and the ultimate limit is shown, all dharmas are not different. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, since all dharmas are without distinction, how are the dharmas that are virtuous and non-virtuous, and those that are predicted or not predicted, to be distinguished? Similarly, how are the dharmas that are with outflows and without outflows, worldly and beyond worldly, conditioned and unconditioned, to be distinguished? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? In the suchness of dharmas, is there anything that is virtuous or non-virtuous, predicted or not predicted, with outflows or without outflows, worldly or beyond worldly, conditioned or unconditioned? Similarly, the fruit of stream-enterer or once-returner?

Or the fruit of non-returning? Or an Arhat? Or a Pratyekabuddha? Or do you think there is any mention of some dharmas up to perfect and complete enlightenment? He replied: Venerable Blessed One, there is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, by these categories, you should understand that all dharmas are not different, without characteristics, without birth, without cessation. Subhuti, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, it was also like this: form, or feeling, or perception, or volitions, or consciousness, or conditioned, or unconditioned, or the fruit of entering the stream, similarly apply it, up to the unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment, I did not perceive the nature of some dharmas. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, from the initial generation of the mind until sitting at the essence of enlightenment, should be skilled in the nature of all dharmas. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is skilled in the nature of all dharmas makes the path to enlightenment completely pure, also completely ripens sentient beings, also makes the Buddha-field completely pure, and manifestly realizes unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment, and after turning the wheel of Dharma, he disciplines sentient beings so that they will not wander in the three realms later. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, should train in the manner of being without characteristics. After he spoke thus, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, dharmas are like dreams and without substance, the nature of being without substance, and empty by their own nature, for example: these are virtuous dharmas, these are non-virtuous dharmas, these are predicted, these are unpredicted, these are with outflows, these are without outflows, these are worldly, these are beyond worldly.
