Chapter Twenty-eight. The Chapter on Different Characteristics. Chapter Twenty-eight. The Chapter on Different Characteristics. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, all dharmas are without distinction and without characteristics. How can the six perfections be fully cultivated in emptiness of their own characteristics? How can these be established as distinct? How can there be a distinction between these dharmas? Venerable Blessed One, among the dharmas included in the Perfection of Wisdom, how is there the Perfection of Giving? Likewise, the Perfection of Ethics, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, and the Perfection of Meditation. Thus, connect as before, up to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, how do they exist? Venerable Blessed One, how do you establish all dharmas without characteristics as having one characteristic?" After he had spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he abides in the five aggregates of grasping that are like a dream. Likewise, he abides in the five aggregates of grasping that are like an echo, like a mirage, like a heat haze, like an illusion, and like a magical creation. He gives alms to sentient beings. Likewise, he keeps the precepts, cultivates patience, exerts diligence, enters into meditations, and cultivates wisdom. The five aggregates of grasping that are like a dream are without characteristics. Likewise, the five aggregates of grasping that are like an echo, like a mirage, like a heat haze, like an illusion, and like a magical creation are without characteristics. Subhuti, why is that? Dreams have no essence, and echoes, mirages, heat hazes, illusions, and magical creations have no essence. Any dharma that has no essence,

also has no characteristic. Whatever has no characteristic is like this: non-characteristic is one characteristic. Subhuti, therefore, in that way, you should understand that the perfection of giving is without characteristic, the giver is without characteristic, and the receiver is without characteristic. Whoever understands in that way and gives, that one does not stray from the perfection of giving, the perfection of discipline, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. Having remained in these six perfections, one perfects the four meditations. Similarly, one perfects the four immeasurables and the four formless absorptions. Similarly, the four mindfulnesses, the four correct abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, and the three doors of liberation are perfected. Similarly, inner emptiness is perfected. Similarly, outer emptiness and the emptiness of non-entity up to the emptiness of self-nature are perfected. Similarly, the eight liberations, the nine serial abidings, the five clairvoyances, the five hundred doors of dharani, the five hundred doors of samadhi, the ten powers of the Thus-gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are perfected. Having remained in those noble, uncontaminated dharmas arising from maturation, one goes to worlds in the eastern direction as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and attends to and honors the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and also reveres them with all necessities. And always one also benefits all sentient beings. Those sentient beings who are to be subdued by giving are subdued by giving. Those who are to be

Those who are to be gathered by discipline, those who are to be gathered by patience, those who are to be gathered by diligence, those who are to be gathered by meditation, those who are to be gathered by wisdom, are gathered by wisdom. Those beings who are to be gathered by all roots of virtue are gathered by all roots of virtue. Although the one who possesses mastery over all dharmas takes rebirth, he is not stained by the faults of rebirth. For the sake of sentient beings, he holds and takes the perfections of gods and humans, and possessing them, he gathers those sentient beings with the objects of gathering. Having thus truly known that all dharmas are without characteristics, he thinks, 'I should attain omniscience.' Subhuti, in that way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, having truly known that all dharmas are without characteristics, attains omniscience. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he dwells in the five aggregates of grasping, which are like a dream, and perfects the Perfection of Discipline. Likewise, dwelling in the five aggregates of grasping, which are like a barren woman, like an optical illusion, like a magic trick, like a mirage, like an emanation, he perfects the Perfection of Discipline. That Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, having known the five aggregates of grasping, which are like a dream, perfects the Perfection of Discipline, which is without characteristics. Likewise, having known the five aggregates of grasping, which are like a barren woman, like an optical illusion, like a mirage, like a magic trick, like an emanation, he perfects the Perfection of Discipline, which is undiminished, flawless, unmixed, stainless, without attachment, independent, praised by the wise, utterly perfect, utterly well-taken, belonging to the supramundane path of the noble ones, free from outflows. Dwelling in that, he truly upholds and guards the discipline with designations.
