Completely holding the perfection of patience. The Blessed One said: "Ravana, here, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of diligence, from the moment of generating the initial mind, until sitting at the heart of the Bodhi tree, if humans or non-humans come and cut off all the limbs and appendages, throwing them in all directions, even then, he would not think, 'Who is cutting or piercing my limbs?' He would think, 'Since I have taken this body for their sake, if they come before me, cut off all my limbs and then leave, I have truly obtained a great gain!' He would only think in this way. Why is that? Because he has well remembered the Dharma's nature of reality. Moreover, he would not dedicate those roots of virtue to the Hearer's stage or the Solitary Realizer's stage, but would share those roots of virtue with all sentient beings, dedicating them entirely to the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. In any case, he would not dedicate with the two kinds of thoughts of who is dedicating or where to dedicate. Ravana, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of diligence is completely holding the perfection of patience." He reported: "Venerable Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of diligence, completely hold the perfection of meditative concentration?" The Blessed One said: "Ravana, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of diligence, secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, from the joy and happiness born of seclusion, cultivates and abides in the first dhyana. Similarly, he cultivates and abides up to the fourth dhyana, and up to the four immeasurables, and up to the attainment of cessation of perception and feeling, although he abides in them,

Therefore, one does not cling to the maturation of these dhyanas, immeasurables, and formless absorptions. Otherwise, wherever beings are to be tamed, one is born there for the sake of those beings. He gathers those beings with the four objects of gathering and establishes them in the six perfections. In order to attend to the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and to generate roots of virtue, one goes from Buddha-field to Buddha-field. All those roots of virtue that arise from reliance on dhyanas and that are generated towards the Buddhas are all gathered together. Having made them common with all sentient beings, one dedicates them entirely to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. In any case, one does not engage in the two kinds of minds: who is dedicating and where one is dedicating. Thus, one dedicates. Noble son, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of diligence, completely upholds the perfection of meditation. Question: Venerable Bhagavan, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of diligence, completely uphold the perfection of wisdom? The Bhagavan said: Noble son, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of diligence, does not truly see even the name of the perfection of generosity. Likewise, he does not truly see the entity and characteristics of the perfection of generosity. Similarly, he does not truly see even the name of the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. Likewise, he does not truly see the entity and characteristics up to the perfection of wisdom. Similarly, he does not truly see even the name of the four mindfulnesses and the noble eightfold path. Likewise, he does not truly see the entity and characteristics. Thus, the above four

Thus should one give, that until the attainment of all-knowingness, one should not truly see in names, one should not truly see in things and characteristics. Likewise, one should not truly see all dharmas in names. One should not truly see all dharmas in things and characteristics, and one should not abide in any dharma, but act as spoken. He gathers all those roots of virtue, shares them with all sentient beings, and dedicates them to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, dedicating them in such a way that no dualistic thoughts arise as to who is dedicating or to where they are dedicating. Thus, Subhuti, the bodhisattva-mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of diligence, is one who fully upholds the perfection of wisdom. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, how does a bodhisattva-mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of meditative concentration, fully uphold the perfection of giving? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, here, a bodhisattva-mahasattva, secluded from desires, secluded from evil and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, with joy and pleasure, having attained the first dhyana, abides. Likewise, he also abandons pleasure, also abandons suffering, and with the previous cessation of joy and sorrow, neither suffering nor pleasure, having attained and abiding in the fourth dhyana, which is purity of equanimity and mindfulness. Likewise, he also attains and abides in the four immeasurables, and in the attainment of cessation of feeling and perception. Abiding in this perfection of meditative concentration, with an undistracted mind, he teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. He also gives the giving of Dharma and the giving of material things. He himself always gives the giving of Dharma and the giving of material things, and he also encourages others to give the giving of Dharma.
