etc., one should not abide in the notion that "consciousness is permanent," nor should one abide in the notion that "consciousness is impermanent." Similarly, one should not abide in the notion that "consciousness is existent," nor should one abide in the notion that "consciousness is nonexistent." Similarly, one should not abide in the notion that "the fruit of stream-entry is distinguished by the conditioned," nor should one abide in the notion that "the fruit of stream-entry is distinguished by the unconditioned." Similarly, the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, and the fruit of Arhatship, one should not abide in the notion that "they are distinguished by the conditioned," nor should one abide in the notion that "they are distinguished by the unconditioned." Similarly, solitary enlightenment and unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, one should not abide in the notion that "they are distinguished by the conditioned," nor should one abide in the notion that "they are distinguished by the unconditioned." Kauśika, furthermore, one should not abide in the notion that "the stream-enterer is a worthy recipient of offerings." Similarly, the once-returner, the non-returner, the Arhat, the solitary Buddha, the Bodhisattva, and the Tathagata are worthy recipients of offerings, one should not abide in this. Kauśika, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, should not abide in this way. Kauśika, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, should not abide in the first Bodhisattva ground. Similarly, one should not abide in a manner of focusing on the grounds up to the tenth ground. Why is that? Because if there is abiding, there will be wavering. Furthermore, one should not abide in the thought, "I will abide in the first generation of mind, and I will perfect the Perfection of Giving." Similarly, one should not abide in the thought, "I will perfect the Perfection of Ethical Conduct, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom." Similarly, one should not abide in the first generation of mind, abiding in a manner of focusing on the thought, "I will meditate on the four close placements of mindfulness."

Likewise, one should practice. For example, one should not abide with the intention, "I shall cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path." Similarly, one should not abide with the intention, "I shall cultivate the ten powers of the Tathagata." One should not abide with the intention, "I shall cultivate the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha." One should not abide with the intention, "I shall enter the faultless state of a Bodhisattva." A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not abide with the intention, "I shall abide in the irreversible stage beneath it." Similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not abide with the intention, "I shall perfect the five superknowledges of a Bodhisattva." After abiding in those five superknowledges of a Bodhisattva, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should go to immeasurable and countless Buddhafields in order to pay homage to the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, to make offerings, to serve, and to listen to the Dharma. Having heard this Dharma, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not abide with the intention, "I shall manifest such Buddhafields of those Buddhas." Likewise, one should not abide with attachment to the Perfection of Wisdom. Similarly, after going to immeasurable and countless world realms, one should not abide with the intention, "I shall honor, respect, revere, and make offerings to the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the Perfectly Awakened Buddhas with flowers, garlands, incense, unguents, umbrellas, banners, and countless silk fabrics." One should not abide with the intention, "Having gone there, I shall establish immeasurable and countless sentient beings in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Likewise, the five eyes, what are the five? Namely, the flesh eye, the divine eye, the Dharma eye, the wisdom eye, and the Buddha eye, one should not abide with the intention, "I shall generate these five eyes."
