I should not abide in this. May the sound of the perfection of generosity arise, and similarly, may only the sound from the perfection of discipline to the perfection of wisdom arise, but I should not abide in that way either. Similarly, may the sound of the mindfulnesses arise, but I should not abide in that way either. Similarly, I should not abide thinking, "May the sound of the eighteen unmixed qualities of the Buddha always arise." I should not abide thinking, "May the sound of those who constantly enter my Buddha-field not arise," and "May the sound of arhats and solitary Buddhas not arise." I should not abide thinking, "May only the sound of bodhisattvas and Buddhas arise." Similarly, combine it. Just as it was taught in the intermediate chapter, so too, it should be extensively combined here. Why is that? Because the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, having manifestly awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete awakening, does not focus on any phenomena. Kauśika, therefore, a bodhisattva, a great being, practicing the perfection of wisdom, should not abide in any phenomena. Then, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the mind of the venerable Sharadvatiputra with his mind, said this to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Where does the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One abide?" After saying this, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the venerable Subhuti: "Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata does not abide anywhere, and the mind of the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One does not abide anywhere, for he does not abide in form, nor does he abide in feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness. He does not abide in the conditioned realm, nor does he abide in the mindfulnesses, nor does he abide in the unmixed qualities of the Buddha.

does not abide in the eighteen realms, and does not abide in the knowledge of all aspects. When this was said, the venerable Subhuti said to the venerable Saradvatiputra: Saradvatiputra, as the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, teaches, it is neither abiding nor not abiding. Thus, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he should abide in all dharmas in this way. Venerable Saradvatiputra, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he should abide in all dharmas in this way. Then, some gods in that assembly thought: We can understand the words of the Yakshas, the speech of the Yakshas, the expressions of the Yakshas, the sounds of the Yakshas, and what the Yakshas should say. But now, we do not understand what the venerable Subhuti is explaining, speaking, showing, interpreting, clarifying, and expounding about the Perfection of Wisdom, and the words he speaks. Then, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the minds of those gods with his mind, said to those gods: Gods, is the Perfection of Wisdom unknowable? They said: Venerable Subhuti, we cannot know the Perfection of Wisdom. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to those gods: Gods, you have heard, but not a single letter has been spoken or shown. Why is that? Gods, the Perfection of Wisdom is not letters, and there is no one who can hear it here. Why is that? Gods, the Bodhi of the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, has no letters. Gods, for example, a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly enlightened Buddha, emanates a Buddha, and that Buddha also emanates

Furthermore, he conjures a gathering of monks, a gathering of nuns, a gathering of laymen, and a gathering of laywomen. After he has manifestly conjured them, he teaches the Dharma to those four gatherings. Sons of the gods, what do you think? In that gathering, does any being teach any Dharma? Does any being hear any Dharma? Is there any awareness? They said: Venerable Subhuti, no. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, it is just so. All dharmas are like illusions. No one speaks them, no being hears them, and no one is aware of them. Sons of the gods, for example, in a dream one sees a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha teaching the Dharma. Sons of the gods, what do you think? Does anyone speak, hear, or fully know? They said: Venerable Subhuti, no. He said: Sons of the gods, it is just so. All dharmas are like dreams. No one speaks them, there is no hearing, and there is no full knowledge. Sons of the gods, for example, two people sit in a bird's nest on a cliff, reciting the praises of the Buddha, and likewise, reciting the praises of the Dharma and the Sangha. From the sound of the words of those two people, two echoes arise. Sons of the gods, what do you think? Does one echo hear the second echo, or is there awareness? They said: Venerable Subhuti, no. Just as before, it should be applied extensively. Sons of the gods, for example, a magician or a skilled disciple of a magician sits at a crossroads on a great road and conjures a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha. That conjured Tathagata also teaches the Dharma to the conjured four gatherings. Sons of the gods, what do you think? Is any Dharma taught by any being? Is any Dharma heard by any being? Is there any awareness? They said: Venerable Subhuti, no. Just as stated before, it should be applied. Then, those sons of the gods...
