It is perfectly pure. Question: Venerable Bhagavan! When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva studies in this way, in what kind of Dharma does he study? The Bhagavan said: Sharadvatiputra! When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva studies in this way, he does not study in any Dharma. Why is that? Sharadvatiputra! These are the things that ordinary people are attached to, because these Dharmas do not exist. Question: Venerable Bhagavan! How is it that these Dharmas, which ordinary people are attached to, do not exist? The Bhagavan said: As it is non-existent, so it exists; as it is non-existent, it is called ignorance. Question: Venerable Bhagavan! Why is it called ignorance when they do not exist? The Bhagavan said: Sharadvatiputra! Because of inner emptiness, and because of the emptiness of the nature of non-things, form does not exist. Likewise, because of inner emptiness, and because of the emptiness of the nature of non-things, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness do not exist. Likewise, because of inner emptiness, and because of the emptiness of the nature of non-things, the four mindfulnesses do not exist and are not visible. Likewise, combining them, because of inner emptiness, and because of the emptiness of the nature of non-things, if even the eighteen unshared Dharmas of the Buddha do not exist, then those ordinary people, under the power of ignorance and craving, are attached, and they conceive of existence in what does not exist. These are like this: clinging to the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, they do not know or see, and they engage in conceptualization about whatever Dharmas do not exist. After conceiving, from attachment to name and form onwards, likewise combining them, even up to attachment to the eighteen unshared Dharmas of the Buddha. Because their attachment itself is such that they engage in various conceptualizations about Dharmas that do not exist, they are those who do not know or see. What do they not know or see?

If so, form is neither known nor seen. Similarly, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are neither known nor seen. Similarly, combining them, up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are neither known nor seen. Because they are neither known nor seen, they are therefore counted among those called ordinary beings. These are not definitely arising; from where are they not definitely arising? They are not definitely arising from the desire realm. Similarly, they are not definitely arising from the form realm and the formless realm. They are not definitely arising in the teachings of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. They are not definitely arising in the teachings of the Bodhisattvas. They are not definitely arising in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddhas. These are those who do not believe: They do not believe that form is emptiness. Similarly, they do not believe that feeling is emptiness, perception is emptiness, formations are emptiness, and consciousness is emptiness, up to not believing in the teachings of the Buddhas. Furthermore, these are those who do not abide; where do they not abide? They do not abide in the perfection of generosity, up to not abiding in the perfection of wisdom. They do not abide in the stage of non-retrogression, and they do not abide in the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha; therefore, they are called ordinary beings, called clinging. What do they cling to, and what do they cling to? They cling to form, up to clinging to consciousness. Similarly, they cling to the eye, up to clinging to the mind. They cling to forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and phenomena. Similarly, they cling to the elements. They cling to desire, hatred, and delusion. They cling to those that have become views. From clinging to the mindfulnesses, similarly combining them, up to clinging to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. Thus it was spoken, finished.

Venerable One, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva learns in that way, he is not learning the Perfection of Wisdom, and he will certainly not realize Omniscience." The Blessed One said: "Sharadvatiputra, a Bodhisattva who learns in that way is not learning the Perfection of Wisdom, and he will certainly not realize Omniscience." He said: "Venerable Blessed One, then how should one learn?" The Blessed One said: "Sharadvatiputra, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, because he is not skilled in means, discriminates the Perfection of Wisdom and clings to it. Likewise, he discriminates and clings to the Perfection of Dhyana, the Perfection of Virya, the Perfection of Kshanti, the Perfection of Shila, and the Perfection of Dana. Likewise, connecting in the same way, he discriminates and clings to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddhas. Having clung to them, he also discriminates All-Knowledge and All-Aspect Knowledge. Having completely discriminated, he also clings to All-Knowledge. Sharadvatiputra, therefore, a Bodhisattva is not learning the Perfection of Wisdom, and he will certainly not realize All-Aspect Knowledge." Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva learns in that way, he is not learning the Perfection of Wisdom, and he will certainly not realize All-Aspect Knowledge." The Blessed One said: "Sharadvatiputra, a Bodhisattva who learns in that way is not learning the Perfection of Wisdom, and he will certainly not realize All-Aspect Knowledge."
