Those names do not exist either internally or externally. They do not exist between the two either. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called four kinds of perfect knowledge are merely designated as dharma. Those designated as dharma have neither arising nor ceasing; they are merely designated by the symbols of names. Those names of the four kinds of perfect knowledge do not exist either internally or externally. They do not exist between the two either. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called great love is merely designated as dharma. Those designated as dharma have neither arising nor ceasing; they are merely designated by the symbols of names. The name of great love does not exist either internally or externally. They do not exist between the two either. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called great compassion is merely designated as dharma. Those designated as dharma have neither arising nor ceasing; they are merely designated by the symbols of names. The name of great compassion does not exist either internally or externally. They do not exist between the two either. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are merely designated as dharma. Those designated as dharma have neither arising nor ceasing; they are merely designated by the symbols of names.

It is merely designated as a dharma. That which is designated as a dharma has neither arising nor ceasing; it is merely a designation with a name's symbol. Those names of the six perfections are neither within nor without, nor do they exist between the two. Sharadvatiputra, for example, what are the so-called six superknowledges? They are merely designated as a dharma. That which is designated as a dharma has neither arising nor ceasing; it is merely a designation with a name's symbol. Those names of superknowledges are neither within nor without, nor do they exist between the two. Sharadvatiputra, for example, what are the so-called five eyes? They are merely designated as a dharma. That which is designated as a dharma has neither arising nor ceasing; it is merely a designation with a name's symbol. Those names of eyes are neither within nor without, nor do they exist between the two. Sharadvatiputra, for example, what are the so-called thirty-two marks of a great person? They are merely designated as a dharma. That which is designated as a dharma has neither arising nor ceasing; it is merely a designation with a name's symbol. Those names of the thirty-two marks of a great person are neither within nor without, nor do they exist between the two. Sharadvatiputra, for example, what are the so-called eighty minor marks? They are merely designated as a dharma. That which is designated as a dharma has neither arising nor ceasing; it is merely a designation with a name's symbol. Those names of the minor marks are neither within nor without, nor do they exist between the two. Sharadvatiputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, should train in this way in the designation of names and the designation of dharmas. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva should thus comprehend the dharma designated by the designation of names. Because he comprehends the dharma designated by the designation of names, he does not cling to form. He does not cling to feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness.

Similarly, one should not be attached to old age and death. Similarly, one should not be attached to the four close placements of mindfulness. Similarly, one should not be attached to the Noble Eightfold Path. Similarly, one should not be attached to the three doors of liberation. Similarly, one should not be attached to emptiness, the nature of non-inherent existence. Similarly, one should not be attached to the ten powers of the Tathagata. Similarly, one should not be attached to the state of omniscience. Similarly, one should not be attached to the six perfections. Similarly, one should not be attached to the eighty excellent marks. After he had spoken, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, if all dharmas are merely designations and names, then, Venerable Blessed One, are all dharmas of the nature of non-inherent existence? Are the dharmas of Bodhisattvas also of the nature of non-inherent existence? Is even enlightenment of the nature of non-inherent existence? If that is so, then the pure conduct will also become non-inherent, and the path of the Bodhisattva will also be non-inherent. The six perfections will also be non-inherent. The realization of the dharmas of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas will also become non-inherent, and I say that liberation from suffering will also be non-inherent. After he had spoken, the Blessed One said this to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Do you think that form is seen as real and thus one is liberated? He replied: Venerable Blessed One, no. Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Do you think that feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are seen as real and thus one is liberated? He replied: Blessed One, no. Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Do you think that the eye is seen as real and thus one is liberated? He replied: Blessed One, no. Sharadvatiputra.
