Because there is no giver, no doer, no doer himself, no instigator, no complete instigator, no feeler, no causer of feeling, no knower, and no seer, and because of the unobtainable, and because of the unborn, and because of the unceasing, and because of emptiness. All dharmas are also unborn, unceasing, empty, unmoving, unnourishing, undiminishing, masterless, unoriginated, uncreated, unmanifestly unaccumulated, and devoid of a doer. Why is that? For example, form is like this: it is just a name. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also the same. Apply it similarly up to aging and death. These called the four mindfulnesses are like this: they are just names. Apply it similarly up to the eightfold noble path. These three doors of liberation are like this: they are just names. Apply it similarly up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things. These ten powers of the Tathagata are like this: they are just names. Apply it similarly up to omniscience. These six perfections are like this: they are just names. Apply it similarly up to the eighty minor marks. Shariputra, are there any real accomplishments in those that are just names? The venerable one replied, "Lord, no." The Lord said: Shariputra, what do you think? If one sees it as accomplished, and grasps at the object, and makes it a sign, and thinks and examines, then is that view grasping and the mind confused? The venerable one replied, "Lord,

In what way are the five aggregates and so on combined, up to the eighty minor marks, that it is merely a name? The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called five aggregates, these are merely designated as phenomena. What is designated as phenomena has no birth, no cessation, it is merely designated by name. The names of the aggregates do not exist within, nor do they exist without, nor do they abide between the two. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called six internal sense bases, these are merely designated as phenomena. What is designated as phenomena has no birth, no cessation, it is merely designated by name. The names of the six internal sense bases do not exist within, nor do they exist without, nor do they abide between the two. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called six external sense bases, these are merely designated as phenomena. What is designated as phenomena has no birth, no cessation, it is merely designated by name. The names of the six external sense bases do not exist within, nor do they exist without, nor do they abide between the two. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the so-called eighteen elements, these are merely designated as phenomena. What is designated as phenomena has no birth, no cessation, it is merely designated by name. The names of the elements do not exist within, nor do they exist without, nor do they abide between the two.
