is abiding therein. Because of attachment and clinging to that solitary place, it is entirely afflicted. But that alone does not satisfy my mind, because I do not possess that solitary place which the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas have spoken of, and I do not appear in that solitary place. Why is that? Because, I do not abide in that solitary place. Then, the evil Mara comes before him, sits in the sky above, and says: 'Well done! Well done! This is the unmistakable solitary place taught by the Tathagata. You should abide in this solitary place, and you will quickly realize the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment.' Having heard this, he cherishes that solitary place even more, and compares those Bodhisattva-yana renunciants, as well as other virtuous ones, to himself, and arrogantly thinks: 'These long-lived ones are abiding in a mixed dwelling.' He encourages those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who are abiding in solitary places, and arrogantly thinks: 'Those who are abiding in a mixed dwelling are not practicing abiding in solitary places.' He does not generate respect for those who should be respected, but instead generates arrogance towards them. Why is that? Because he thinks: 'This way of abiding in which I am abiding is the correct one, so non-humans will encourage me, non-humans will remember me, but who will encourage and remember those who live near the village?' Therefore, that Bodhisattva will treat other sons of the Bodhisattva-yana in such an arrogant way. Subhuti, it should be known that he is an inferior Bodhisattva, a defamer of Bodhisattvas, a pretender to be a Bodhisattva, a thief of the world including gods, humans, and asuras, and one who deceives gods, humans, and asuras with the appearance of a renunciant.

It should be known that stealing is for the world belonging to the category of existence. It should be known that robbery is for the sons of the lineage of the Bodhisattva Vehicle. A person with such a nature should not be approached, should not be relied upon, and should not be revered. Why is that? Subhuti, it should be known that such a person has pride in his attainments. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who has not abandoned the Omniscient One, and who has not abandoned the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, with a superior intention, desiring to realize the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, and desiring to accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings, should not approach, should not rely upon, and should not revere a person with such a nature. Otherwise, one should always be disgusted with samsara, be fearful, and not mix with the three realms, but should diligently practice one's own benefit. One should also generate loving-kindness towards that person. One should also generate compassion and loving-kindness towards that person. One should generate joy and equanimity. In any case, one should act in such a way that one does not generate or produce such faults in any way or under any circumstances. Even if they arise, they should be quickly abandoned. One should learn in this way. Subhuti, this should be known as the dullness of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas through their own realization. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with a superior intention, desiring to realize the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, should approach, rely upon, and revere virtuous friends. After he had spoken, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Lord, who are the virtuous friends of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas?" After he had asked this, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Subhuti:
