will change. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva speaks of whatever name he investigates and practices. Thereupon, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, who has the nature of unsteady wisdom and is skilled in means, thinks thus: "Whatever name I have investigated and contemplated with my mind, that will become the name by which I will manifestly and perfectly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Thinking thus, if the evil Mara, or a god of Mara's retinue, or a monk blessed by Mara, teaches, he thinks thus: "This monk has taught according to how I generated the mind and what my name is. Since the person and the name are in agreement, I am the one who has been prophesied by the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Thinking thus, Subhuti, whatever forms, signs, and characteristics I have shown of the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, those are not present in that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, and are also separate from forms, signs, and characteristics. If he generates pride because of the name that has been taught, and if he becomes arrogant and contemptuous towards other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, then that arrogance, contempt, and disdain will distance him from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Thus, if he is devoid of skillful means, separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, separated from a virtuous friend, and completely seized by evil companions, then his ground should be known in two ways: namely, the ground of a Hearer and the ground of a Solitary Buddha. Or else, having wandered and transmigrated in samsara for a very long time, he will rely on this Perfection of Wisdom and manifestly and perfectly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. If he finds joy and delight in repeatedly seeing a virtuous friend and attends to and honors him, even if he obtains that body, if he does not slander or destroy those previous generations of aspiration, then his

The ground should also be known as twofold, namely, the ground of the Hearers and the ground of the Solitary Buddhas. Subhuti, for example, if a bhikshu commits any of the four root downfalls, he is not a shramana, not a son of the Shakyas, because he is not qualified to attain any of the four fruits of a shramana with his own body. Subhuti, similarly, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates pride merely by mentioning the name and thus generates the mind, and merely by uttering the name generates pride and contempt towards other Bodhisattvas, then this is even heavier than that, and it should be known that generating the mind is even heavier than that. Subhuti, let alone the four heavy root downfalls, generating the mind with pride merely by mentioning the name of a Bodhisattva is even heavier than the five inexpiable sins, and it should be known that generating the mind is even heavier than that. Subhuti, thus, merely mentioning the name will cause such subtle deeds of Mara to arise. Subhuti, furthermore, the evil Mara will come speaking of the solitary qualities of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, and having come, will say thus: The Tathagata speaks of the solitary qualities. Subhuti, I do not say that solitary places, forest edges, and remote dwelling places are the solitude of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, if that is so, if solitary places, forest edges, and remote dwelling places are not solitude, then what is the other solitude of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? Blessed One, what other kind of solitude does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva have? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is solitary from the mental activities associated with Hearers and solitary from the mental activities associated with Solitary Buddhas, that is the solitude of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Living in solitary places, forest edges, and remote dwelling places is the Bodhisattva-

It is not the solitude of the base. Subhuti, that is the solitude of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, which I have permitted. If the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells day and night in this solitude, then he dwells in solitude. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is like this: this solitude of the Bodhisattva, dwelling in monasteries and, forest edges and, remote dwellings, that is dwelling in solitude. If the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells in this solitude at the edge of a village, he is still dwelling in solitude. Subhuti, the solitude of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva that I have permitted is to allow the evil demon to dwell in monasteries and, forest edges and, remote dwellings. Thus it is taught. That solitude is mixed with the attention corresponding to the Hearers and, the attention corresponding to the Solitary Buddhas, therefore it does not strive in the Perfection of Wisdom, and it also does not perfect all-knowingness. He dwells by dwelling in such an impure attention. Different from this, other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, who dwell at the edge of villages, whose minds and attentions are completely pure, not mixed with the mind of the Hearers, not mixed with the mind of the Solitary Buddhas, not mixed with the evil minds that are different from that, for those who have perfected the dhyanas and, the liberations and, the samadhis and, the attainments and, the superknowledges and, the complete knowledges, they develop pride. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is unskilled in means, in a deserted monastery of a hundred yojanas, without poisonous insects and, wild animals and, birds, without monasteries of thieves, not a place where the path of Rakshasas appears, in such a place, for a year or, a hundred years or, a thousand years or, a million years or, a billion trillion years, or even longer, but if he does not know by what solitude the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva can correctly enter and dwell in the solitude of higher intention, then that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is mixed.
