Without separation, giving alms, guarding morality, practicing patience, making diligent effort, entering into meditative concentration, is inseparable from the perfection of wisdom and skillful means. The morality, meditative concentration, wisdom, liberation, and knowledge and vision of liberation of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present, do not grasp at any characteristics. They do not grasp at the characteristic of the meditative concentration of emptiness. They do not grasp at the characteristic of the meditative concentration of the signless and the wishless. Shariputra, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not abide in the ground of the Hearers or the ground of the Solitary Buddhas, it should be known. Why is that? Like this, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, from the arising of the first thought, having taken hold of giving alms, but not grasping at characteristics; guarding morality; practicing patience; making diligent effort; entering into meditative concentration; cultivating wisdom, but also not grasping at characteristics; not grasping at the characteristics of the morality, meditative concentration, wisdom, liberation, and knowledge and vision of liberation of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present; cultivating the meditative concentration of emptiness, the signless, and the wishless, but also not grasping at characteristics. Shariputra, like this, giving alms with a mind devoid of characteristics, guarding morality, practicing patience, making diligent effort, entering into meditative concentration, cultivating wisdom, and similarly applying it, even acting until the state of all-knowingness, but not grasping at characteristics, this is the skillful means of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Shariputra asked: Bhagavat, as I understand the meaning spoken by the Bhagavat, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who, from the arising of the first thought, having taken hold of the perfection of wisdom and not separated from skillful means, their unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment is without doubt. Why is that? Bhagavat, like this

From the moment a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the initial thought, in order to manifestly and perfectly awaken, and by what means to manifestly and perfectly awaken, and the form, feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness by which one manifestly and perfectly awakens, likewise, up to the state of all-knowingness, it is for the sake of not fixating on any dharma. Bhagavan, those sons or daughters of noble family of the Bodhisattva vehicle who are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and separated from skillful means, their unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is to be known as doubtful. Why is that? Bhagavan, for example, sons or daughters of noble family of the Bodhisattva vehicle who are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, whatever I give as charity, all of that is given while grasping at signs; and whatever discipline is kept, patience cultivated, diligence exerted, and whatever concentration is entered into, all of that is also entered into while grasping at signs. Therefore, the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment of those sons and daughters of noble family of the Bodhisattva vehicle is to be known as doubtful. Bhagavan, thus it is, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who wishes to manifestly and perfectly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment should be known as not separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means. Abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, with a mind that does not fixate and is endowed with signlessness, one should give charity, keep discipline, cultivate patience, exert diligence, enter into concentration, and meditate on wisdom. Likewise, one should practice up to the state of all-knowingness. Then, in the presence of the Bhagavan, the sons of the gods who dwell in desire and form realms spoke thus: Bhagavan, for example, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva

And also one should strive to fully awaken to all dharmas. Since those dharmas are neither existent nor perceptible, the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is difficult to manifest. The Blessed One declared: "Sons of the gods, it is just so. The unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is indeed difficult to manifest. Sons of the gods, I also have fully awakened to all dharmas in every aspect, but I have not perceived anything that should be fully awakened to, or by which one should fully awaken, or any dharma that should be fully awakened to. Why is that? Sons of the gods, it is because all dharmas are utterly pure." Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, as you have declared, 'The unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is difficult to manifest,' as I understand the meaning of what the Blessed One has said, and as I think, Blessed One, the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is easy to fully awaken to. Why is that? Blessed One, it is like this: there is no one who fully awakens, and there is nothing that fully awakens. Therefore, all dharmas are emptiness. Because all dharmas are emptiness, there is no one who fully awakens, nor by what one fully awakens, nor any dharma that should be fully awakened to. Why is that? Blessed One, it is like this: all dharmas are emptiness. There are no dharmas for giving alms in order to increase or decrease any dharma, or for entering into meditative absorption, or even for studying all-knowingness. And all those who fully awaken and the dharmas that should be fully awakened to are also emptiness. Blessed One, in that way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva with the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment
