Thus they spoke. Then, the Venerable Subhuti, taking up the words of those gods from that very thread, spoke thus to those gods: Gods, thus, the Venerable Subhuti is not born after form, nor born after anything other than form. He is not born after the Suchness of form, nor born after anything other than the Suchness of form.

Was not born. The suchness of the unconditioned, not born following others. Why is that? Because thus, that by which it is born, and the dharma that is born following, are non-existent and unattainable. Then, the venerable Shariputra said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, suchness, and non-erroneous suchness, and non-other suchness, and dharma-nature, and the realm of dharma, and the abiding nature of dharma, and the faultless nature of dharma, and the ultimate of truth, and the inconceivable realm, are profound. In this, form is not perceived, the suchness of form is not perceived, and if form itself is not perceived, how can one see the suchness of form as perceived? In this, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are not perceived, the suchness of consciousness is not perceived, and if consciousness itself is not perceived, how can one see the suchness of consciousness as perceived? Apply it similarly, in this, up to all-knowingness is not perceived, the suchness of all-knowingness is not perceived, and if all-knowingness itself is not perceived, how can one see the suchness of all-knowingness as perceived? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, it is so, it is so. Shariputra, suchness is profound, in this, form is not perceived, the suchness of form is not perceived, and if form itself is not perceived, how can one see the suchness of form as perceived? In this, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are not perceived, the suchness of consciousness is not perceived, and if consciousness itself is not perceived, how can one see the suchness of consciousness as perceived? Apply it similarly, up to all-knowingness is not perceived, the suchness of all-knowingness is not perceived, and if all-knowingness itself is not perceived, how can one see the suchness of all-knowingness as perceived? When this chapter on suchness, and non-erroneous suchness, and non-other suchness was taught, two hundred monks

Without clinging, the mind is liberated from all defilements. The five hundred nuns, in all dharmas, attained the pure Dharma-eye, free from dust and defilements. The five thousand Bodhisattvas attained the patience of non-arising dharmas. Sixty Bodhisattvas who had fallen away, without clinging, their minds were liberated from all defilements. Shariputra, those Bodhisattvas had served and honored five hundred Buddhas, and in all places gave alms, kept the precepts, practiced patience, exerted effort, cultivated meditation, and cultivated wisdom, but they were not fully grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, nor were they fully grasped by skillful means. Thus they practiced: 'This is generosity. I shall give alms here. I shall keep this precept. I shall practice this patience. I shall exert this effort. I shall enter into this meditation. I shall cultivate this wisdom.' Thinking thus, they practiced, but they were separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and were not fully grasped by skillful means. They cultivated generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, and because they practiced in various perceptions, not perceiving the absence of difference, they did not enter the faultless path of the Bodhisattva. Because they did not enter the faultless path of the Bodhisattva, they attained the fruit of entering the stream, even up to the state of Arhat. Shariputra, furthermore, the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, emptiness, or signlessness, or wishlessness, exists, but if they are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and are not fully grasped by skillful means, then having directly realized the true limit, they will become Hearers or Solitary Buddhas. Shariputra asked: "Bhagavan, for what reason, although they cultivate those very dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, but being separated from skillful means, they realize the true limit and become Hearers and Solitary Buddhas? Bhagavan, the Bodhisattvas cultivate those very dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness."
