And also, by relying on skillful means, one can manifest and perfectly realize the unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment. The Bhagavan said: Shariputra, here, some people, separated from the mind of all-knowingness, meditate on emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Because they do not rely on skillful means, they become Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Shariputra, here, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who are not separated from the mind of all-knowingness meditate on emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Relying on skillful means, they enter the faultless state of a Bodhisattva and manifest and perfectly realize the unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment. Shariputra, for example, there is a bird with a body of one hundred yojanas, or two hundred yojanas, or three hundred yojanas, or four hundred yojanas, or five hundred yojanas. It thinks of coming from the heaven of the Thirty-three to Jambudvipa, but this bird has no wings. It thinks of leaping from the heaven of the Thirty-three and going to Jambudvipa. If this bird does not fall to the ground, it thinks: I should stay in the heaven of the Thirty-three. When it thinks like this, Shariputra, what do you think? Can this bird return to the heaven of the Thirty-three? Shariputra said: Bhagavan, that is impossible. The Bhagavan said: If in between it thinks: I should stay in Jambudvipa without being harmed or damaged. When it thinks like this, Shariputra, what do you think? Can this bird stay in Jambudvipa without being harmed or damaged? Shariputra said: Bhagavan, that is impossible. Bhagavan, this bird will either be injured or damaged, or it will die before reaching Jambudvipa, or it will be in pain near death. Why is that? Bhagavan, because it has a large body but no wings, and it jumps from a high place, it will definitely be like that. Bhagavan.

The departed one thus declared: Shariputra, thus a Bodhisattva gives alms for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, keeps the precepts, cultivates patience, exerts effort, enters into meditative concentration, and for the sake of fully awakening to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, their entry is also great, their aspiration is also great, and their thought of benefiting beings is also immeasurably vast. However, if they are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not fully grasped by skillful means, they will fall into the ground of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas. Why is that? Because, in this way, that Bodhisattva, great being, gives alms, keeps the precepts, cultivates patience, exerts effort, and cultivates meditative concentration while being separated from the mind of all-knowingness, but that Bodhisattva will be separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means. Therefore, they will fall into the ground of the Hearers and the Solitary Buddhas. Shariputra, the precepts, meditative concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the wisdom of liberation of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have appeared in the past, have not yet come, and are appearing now, although they think of and hold onto their characteristics, they do not know the precepts of the Thus-Gone Ones, even up to the wisdom of liberation. If they do not know and do not understand, when they hear the sounds of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, they hold onto the sign of peace, and having held onto the sign, they dedicate it to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. A Bodhisattva who dedicates in this way will abide in the ground of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas. Why is that? Shariputra, because they are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, dedicating the roots of virtue to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment will be like that, and they will fall into the ground of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas. Shariputra, here, a Bodhisattva, a great being, from the moment of first generating the mind, closely approaches the mind of all-knowingness.
