Conceiving of myself as formless, I behold external forms; this is the second liberation. Regarding suffering itself as pleasure, this is the third liberation. Having completely transcended all perceptions of form, with the perceptions of resistance extinguished, and not attending to various perceptions, thinking, 'Space is infinite,' cultivating and abiding in the sphere of infinite space, this is the fourth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking, 'Consciousness is infinite,' cultivating and abiding in the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the fifth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking, 'There is nothing at all,' cultivating and abiding in the sphere of nothingness, this is the sixth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, cultivating and abiding in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the seventh liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, cultivating and abiding in the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the eighth liberation. Subhuti, this is the Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: the nine successive abidings in meditative equipoise. What are the nine? Separated from desires, separated from unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of separation, possessing joy and pleasure, the first dhyana is cultivated and abided in. Having abandoned initial and sustained application, with inner purity, the mind becoming one-pointed, without initial application, without sustained application, born of concentration, possessing joy and pleasure, the second dhyana is cultivated and abided in. Having abandoned attachment to joy, abiding in equanimity, being mindful and fully aware, experiencing pleasure with the body, as the noble ones say, being mindful, abiding in pleasure, being equanimous. As it is said, without joy, without pleasure, the third dhyana is cultivated and abided in. He

That too is abandoned. Previously, suffering was also abandoned, and comfort and discomfort of mind also ceased. Neither comfort nor suffering, but equanimity, and the fourth dhyana, with completely pure mindfulness, is cultivated and dwelt in. Regarding what is possible, one thoroughly knows it as it is to be possible. Regarding what is impossible, one thoroughly knows it as it is to be impossible. And regarding the actions of the past, future, and present, and the places and fully ripened results of actions that are fully undertaken, one thoroughly knows them as they are.
