Therefore, he fully understands how his body remains in whatever state it is in. Subhuti, thus, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, being steadfast, possessing awareness, and endowed with mindfulness, eliminates covetousness and displeasure towards the world, and dwells contemplating the body in the inner body. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells contemplating the body in the inner body, he acts with awareness whether he goes or returns. He acts with awareness whether he looks around or looks in detail. Contracting and stretching, wearing the monastic robe and carrying the alms bowl, eating and drinking, chewing and tasting, sleeping and dispelling the oppression of sleep, coming and going, standing, sitting, lying down, not lying down, speaking and not speaking, and even when focusing inwardly, he acts with awareness. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he dwells contemplating the body in the inner body, and he dwells in a non-referential manner. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva breathes in mindfully, he fully understands, just as it is, that he is breathing in mindfully. When he breathes out mindfully, he fully understands, just as it is, that he is breathing out mindfully. When he breathes in long, he fully understands, just as it is, that he is breathing in long. When he breathes out long, he fully understands, just as it is, that he is breathing out long. When he breathes in short, he fully understands, just as it is, that he is breathing in short. When he breathes out short, he fully understands, just as it is, that he is breathing out short. Subhuti, for example, a potter or a skilled disciple of a potter, when turning a wheel and kneading for a long time, fully understands that he is kneading for a long time. When kneading briefly, he fully understands that he is kneading briefly. Subhuti, similarly, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva breathes in mindfully, he fully understands, just as it is, that he is breathing in mindfully. When he breathes out mind

When exhaling, one fully knows that one is exhaling, just as it is. When inhaling a long breath, one fully knows that one is inhaling a long breath, just as it is. When exhaling a long breath, one fully knows that one is exhaling a long breath, just as it is. When inhaling a short breath, one fully knows that one is inhaling a short breath, just as it is. When exhaling a short breath, one fully knows that one is exhaling a short breath, just as it is. Subhuti, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is diligent, possesses right knowledge, possesses mindfulness, and having eliminated attachment and displeasure towards the world, abides contemplating the body in the inner body, and also abides in a non-conceptual manner. Subhuti, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva accurately discerns the elements of this very body, just as they are, thinking, 'In this body, there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element.' Thus he contemplates. Subhuti, for example, a butcher or a skilled disciple of a butcher, having slaughtered a cow with a sharp knife, divides it into four parts, separates it into four pieces, and either standing or sitting, observes them separately, in the same way. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he also separately observes the elements of this very body, thinking, 'In this body, there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element.' Thus he separately observes. Subhuti, thus when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, whether standing or sitting, he also abides contemplating the body in the inner body, and abides in a non-conceptual manner. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he accurately discerns this very body, from the soles of the feet upwards, to the hair and the top of the head downwards, up to the nails and hair and skin, as being filled with various impure things, just as they are, thinking, 'In this body, there is hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, blood, bones, legs, heart,'
