Gallbladder and liver, lungs and spleen, cecum and intestines, kidneys and bladder, urine and feces, tears and sweat, fat and mucus, pus and bile, phlegm and grease, pus and dirt, head and brain, eye mucus and earwax, etc., for this body, truly observe each one as it is. Subhuti, for example, a farmer fills rice, grains, sesame, paddy, mung beans, soybeans, lentils, barley, wheat, mustard seeds, and various grains. A person with eyes separates and observes them, like this: This is rice, this is grain, this is sesame, this is paddy, this is mung bean, this is soybean, this is lentil, this is barley, this is wheat, this is mustard seed, thus he knows. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, for this body, from the soles of the feet upwards, to the hair and the top of the head downwards, up to the nails and hair and skin, filled with various impure things, truly observes each one as it is. This body has hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, tendons, blood, bones, marrow, heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, spleen, cecum, intestines, kidneys, bladder, urine, feces, tears, dust, fat, mucus, thick mucus, pus, bile, phlegm, grease, pus, dirt, head, brain, eye mucus, earwax, etc. Thus he observes. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, being careful and aware, possessing mindfulness, eliminating greed and displeasure towards the world, observes the body in the body, and dwells in it, also dwells in a non-attached manner. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells in a charnel ground, he sees various corpses discarded in the charnel ground, dead for a day or

Or after two days of death, or after three days of death, or after four days of death, or after five days of death, when seeing a swollen, or livid, or rotten, or worm-eaten corpse, (one thinks) this body is also of such a nature, also of such a self-nature, and is not separate from this law. Thus, one connects this body with that state. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is diligent, conscious, and possesses mindfulness, thereby eliminating attachment and displeasure towards the world, and dwells in the contemplation of the body. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva sees in a charnel ground a corpse abandoned, six days after death or seven days after death, crows and other creatures are pecking at it, or owls, or hawks, or vultures, or carrion birds, or jackals, or foxes, or dogs, or any kind of living beings are pecking at it in various ways, (one thinks) this body is also of such a nature, also of such a self-nature, and is not separate from this law. Thus, one connects this body with that state. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is diligent, conscious, and possesses mindfulness, thereby eliminating attachment and displeasure towards the world, and dwells in the contemplation of the external body. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva sees in a charnel ground a corpse abandoned, completely pecked at, unclean, rotten, and emitting a foul odor, (one thinks) this body is also of such a nature, also of such a self-nature, and is not separate from this law. Thus, one connects this body with that state. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is diligent, conscious, and possesses mindfulness, thereby eliminating attachment and displeasure towards the world, and dwells in the contemplation of the body. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva sees in a charnel ground a skeleton, flesh and blood piled up like a mountain, and tendons crisscrossing, (one thinks) this body is also of such a nature, also of such a self-nature, and is not separate from this law.
