And because the mind's continuum has become one, without conception, with joy and bliss born from samadhi without investigation, he abides having attained the second dhyana. He, having become detached from desire for joy, abides in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, experiencing happiness with the body, and the noble ones say that this is having mindfulness, practicing equanimity in happiness, and he abides having attained the third dhyana without joy. He, having abandoned happiness and also abandoned suffering, and also because the previous mental happiness and unhappiness have ceased, enters into neither happiness nor suffering, purified by equanimity and mindfulness, and abides having attained the fourth dhyana. He completely transcends the perception of form in every way, the perceptions of resistance have ceased, and not thinking of various perceptions, he abides in the infinity of space, having attained the sphere of infinite space. He completely transcends the sphere of infinite space in every way, knowing that consciousness is infinite, he abides having attained the sphere of infinite consciousness. He completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness in every way, knowing that there is nothing at all, he abides having attained the sphere of nothingness. He completely transcends the sphere of nothingness in every way, he abides having attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. He completely transcends the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception in every way, he abides having attained the cessation of perception and feeling, and this is called the nine successive abidings. Among these, what are the ten all-encompassing spheres? They are all earth, all water, all fire, all wind, all blue, all yellow, all red, all white, all consciousness, and all space. These are called the ten all-encompassing spheres. Among these, what are the eight spheres of mastery? Having the perception of form internally, perceiving external forms, either beautiful or ugly.
