Chapter Sixty-Two Chapter Sixty-Two Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how can one differentiate regarding all dharmas, which are like dreams, without substance, whose very nature is emptiness by their own nature, saying, 'These are wholesome dharmas,' 'These are unwholesome dharmas,' 'These are worldly dharmas,' 'These are supramundane dharmas,' 'These are defiled dharmas,' 'These are undefiled dharmas,' 'These are conditioned dharmas,' 'These are unconditioned dharmas,' 'These are the causes for realizing the fruit of stream-entry,' 'These are the causes for realizing the fruit of once-returner, non-returner, and arhat,' 'These are the causes for becoming a self-awakened one,' 'These are the causes for becoming unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment'? How can one differentiate regarding all dharmas, which are like echoes, like cataracts, like illusions, like mirages, like apparitions, without substance, whose very nature is emptiness by their own nature, saying, 'These are wholesome dharmas,' 'These are unwholesome dharmas,' 'These are worldly dharmas,' 'These are supramundane dharmas,' 'These are defiled dharmas,' 'These are undefiled dharmas,' 'These are conditioned dharmas,' 'These are unconditioned dharmas,' 'These are the causes for realizing the fruit of stream-entry,' 'These are the causes for realizing the fruit of once-returner, non-returner, and arhat,' 'These are the causes for becoming a self-awakened one,' 'These are the causes for becoming unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment'?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, in this case, an unlearned common person also clings to dreams and also clings to seeing dreams. They also cling to echoes and also cling to hearing echoes.

Yes. Eye-disease should also be observed, and the appearance of eye-disease should also be observed. Illusion should also be observed, and the appearance of illusion should also be observed. Mirage should also be observed, and the appearance of mirage should also be observed. Emanation should also be observed, and the appearance of emanation should also be observed. Therefore, dreams should also be observed, the appearance of dreams should also be observed, the interval of emanation should also be observed, and the appearance of emanation should also be observed, so that with body, speech, and mind, one also manifestly performs virtuous actions. With body, speech, and mind, one also manifestly performs non-virtuous actions. With body, speech, and mind, one also manifestly performs meritorious, non-meritorious, and unwavering actions. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, abiding in emptiness that is without limit, emptiness that is without beginning or end, abiding in the two emptinesses, he teaches the Dharma to sentient beings: This three realms are empty, in which there is no form, no feeling, no perception, no formation, no consciousness, no sense bases, no elements. This is a dream, this is an echo, this is eye-disease, this is illusion, this is a mirage, this is an emanation, in which there are no aggregates, no sense bases, no elements. In this, there is no dream, there is no appearance of dream, there is no echo, there is no hearing of echo, there is no eye-disease, there is no appearance of eye-disease, there is no illusion, there is no performance of illusion, there is no mirage, there is no appearance of mirage, there is no emanation, there is no performance of emanation. All these dharmas are without substance, are the nature of non-substance. However, you perceive aggregates in what is without aggregates, perceive sense bases in what is without sense bases, perceive elements in what is without elements. All these dharmas arise from the perversion of dependent origination, and are held by the ripening of karma. Why do you, in all dharmas that are without substance, cling to the concept of substance? When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with skillful means, he liberates stingy beings from stinginess.

Conversely, associating with the perfection of generosity, complete generosity also becomes the cause for them to obtain great enjoyment. He elevates them from that and associates them with the perfection of discipline, and properly upholding discipline also becomes the cause for them to be reborn in the heavens.
