The consciousnesses are not observed. The suchness of consciousness is not observed. If consciousness itself is not observed, how can the suchness of consciousness be observed? The sense bases, elements, and dependent origination are not observed. The suchness of dependent origination is not observed. If dependent origination itself is not observed, how can the suchness of dependent origination be observed? All perfections, all emptinesses, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are not observed. The suchness of the factors of enlightenment is not observed. If the factors of enlightenment themselves are not observed, how can the suchness of the factors of enlightenment be observed? Up to and including all-knowingness is not observed. The suchness of all-knowingness is not observed. If all-knowingness itself is not observed, how can the suchness of all-knowingness be observed? When this chapter on suchness, unmistaken suchness, and non-other suchness was taught, two hundred monks, without attachment, had their minds completely liberated from defilements. Five hundred nuns developed the Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding phenomena. Five thousand bodhisattvas and gods attained great tolerance for the unborn Dharma. Sixty bodhisattvas subject to falling away had their minds completely liberated from defilements, without attachment. Those great bodhisattvas, the sons of Sharadvati, had served five hundred Buddhas, and in all places had given alms, kept vows, cultivated patience, exerted effort, practiced meditation, and cultivated wisdom, but they had not been fully grasped by the perfection of wisdom, nor had they been fully grasped by skillful means, so they gave alms. This is alms. I should give alms. This is morality. I should keep it. This is patience. I should cultivate it. This is diligence. I should exert it. This is meditation. I

acting differently, saying, "This is wisdom, I should meditate on it." Those who are separated from the perfection of wisdom and not fully grasped by skillful means give alms, keep the precepts, practice patience, exert effort, enter into meditation, and become accustomed to wisdom. Because they act with various concepts and do not perceive in a non-differentiated way, they do not enter the faultless path of the Bodhisattva. Because they do not enter the faultless path of the Bodhisattva, they attain the fruit of entering the stream, up to the state of an Arhat. Sharadvatiputra, although the path of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, emptiness, signlessness, or wishlessness exists, if they are separated from the perfection of wisdom and not fully grasped by skillful means, they will manifest the ultimate limit and become Hearers or Solitary Buddhas. Asked: Blessed One, why is it that even though they meditate on the same emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, those who are separated from the perfection of wisdom and separated from skillful means first accomplish the ultimate limit and become Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, while Bodhisattvas who are fully grasped by skillful means, even though they meditate on the same emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, relying on skillful means, will manifest unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment and become Buddhas? The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, some here are separated from the mind of all aspects of knowledge and meditate only on emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and because they have not attained skillful means, they will become Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, here Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who are not separated from the mind of all aspects of knowledge meditate on emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and because they have attained skillful means, they enter the faultless path of the Bodhisattva and manifest unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment and become Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, it is like this, for example, a bird...

Having a body of one hundred measures, or two hundred measures, or three hundred measures, or four hundred measures, or five hundred measures, it wishes to come here from the realm of the thirty-three gods. And that bird has no wings. Thinking, 'I shall dwell in Jambudvipa,' it leaps down from the realm of the thirty-three gods. If that bird thinks on the way, 'How shall I dwell in the realm of the thirty-three gods?' What do you think of this, son of Sharadvati? Can that bird return to the realm of the thirty-three gods?" He replied, "No, Blessed One." The Blessed One said, "If it thinks on the way, 'By no means shall I dwell in Jambudvipa without being harmed or injured,' what do you think of this, son of Sharadvati? Can that bird dwell in Jambudvipa without being harmed or injured?" He replied, "No, Blessed One. Blessed One, it will fall into Jambudvipa and be harmed or injured, die or suffer near death." Why is that? Blessed One, that which is so large and has no wings will certainly become so. The Blessed One said: Son of Sharadvati, likewise, a Bodhisattva gives alms, keeps the precepts, cultivates patience, exerts effort, and meditates for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River. For the sake of attaining unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, his aspiration is great, his generation of mind is great, and his retention is immeasurable. However, if he is separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not grasped by skillful means, he will fall into the ground of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva gives alms, keeps the precepts, cultivates patience, exerts effort, and meditates without being endowed with the mind of all-knowingness. Because the Bodhisattva is separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not grasped by skillful means, he will fall into the ground of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas. Sharadvati
