The suchness of the All-Knowing Wisdom and the suchness of the Tathagata are not two, they cannot be made into two. This, Subhuti, is the suchness of the Tathagata. Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, having manifestly and perfectly awakened to that suchness, will obtain the name called Tathagata. When this chapter on suchness was taught, this three-thousand great thousand world realm shook in six ways: It shook, it shook greatly, it shook completely. It moved, it moved greatly, it moved completely. It tilted, it tilted greatly, it tilted completely. It flashed, it flashed greatly, it flashed completely. It roared, it roared greatly, it roared completely. It drizzled, it drizzled greatly, it drizzled completely. When the east was high, the west was low. When the east was low, the west was high. When the north was high, the south was low. When the north was low, the south was high. When the center was high, the edges were low. When the center was low, the edges were high. Then, the sons of the gods in the desire realm and those in the form realm scattered celestial sandalwood powder on the Bhagavan and the Venerable Subhuti, scattering it manifestly and exceedingly, and said this: "Bhagavan, it is wonderful that this Venerable Subhuti is born after the Tathagata by the suchness of the Tathagata!" Then, the Venerable Subhuti, taking up the words of those sons of the gods, spoke thus to those sons of the gods: "Thus, sons of the gods, the Venerable Subhuti is not born after form, nor is he born after anything other than form. He is not born after the suchness of form, nor is he born after anything other than the suchness of form. He is not born after feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor is he born after anything other than consciousness. He is not born after the suchness of consciousness, nor is he born after anything other than the suchness of consciousness. He is not born after the sense bases, elements, or dependent origination, nor is he born after anything other than dependent origination.

It is not born in the ground. It is not born after the suchness of dependent arising. It is not born after anything other than the suchness of dependent arising. It is not born after all the perfections, all emptiness, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the noble truths, meditative absorption, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine serial abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, extrasensory perception, samādhi, the entrances of dhāraṇī, the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the four fearlessnesses, the four kinds of perfect knowledge, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. Because all those things—whatever is born, whatever is born from, whatever is produced, whatever is produced from, whatever will be born, and whatever will be born from—are nonexistent and cannot be found. Then the venerable Śāradvatīputra said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One,

Suchness, non-erroneous suchness, non-other suchness, the nature of phenomena and the realm of phenomena, the abiding nature of phenomena, the faultlessness of phenomena, and the ultimate reality are profound. In that, form is not perceived, the suchness of form is not perceived, and even the nature of form is not perceived. How then could the suchness of form be seen or perceived? In that, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are not perceived. The suchness of consciousness is not perceived, and even the nature of consciousness is not perceived. How then could the suchness of consciousness be seen or perceived? The sense bases, the elements, and dependent origination are not perceived. The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, it is thus. It is thus, this suchness is profound.
