permanence, immeasurable states, formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, direct knowledge, samadhi, the doors of dharani, the powers of the Tathagata, fearlessness, individual perfect knowledge, and the unmixed qualities of a Buddha are empty of their own nature of unmixed qualities of a Buddha. Up to the state of all-knowingness, it is empty of its own nature of all-knowingness. Then the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, for that reason, it is difficult to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Venerable Subhuti, it is like this: the sky does not think, 'I will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' Venerable Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva also does not think, 'I will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' Why is that? It is because all phenomena are equal to the sky. However, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva awakens to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment by believing that all phenomena are like the sky. If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not believe that all phenomena are like the sky, it is easy to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. If there were no difficulty in awakening to enlightenment, then Bodhisattvas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges would not turn back from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Venerable Subhuti, for that reason, it is difficult to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Know that it is not easy to awaken to enlightenment." Subhuti said, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, what do you think?

Does it turn away from the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment? He replied: Venerable Subhuti, it is not so. He asked: Then, do feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousness turn away from the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment? He replied: Venerable Subhuti, it is not so.
