The Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is as follows: eleven kinds of knowledge. What are the eleven? Knowing suffering, knowing the origin, knowing cessation, knowing the path, knowing exhaustion, knowing non-arising, knowing the Dharma, knowing subsequent realization, knowing convention, knowing familiarity, and knowing speech as it is. What is knowing suffering? Knowing that suffering does not arise. What is knowing the origin? Knowing to abandon the origin. What is knowing cessation? Knowing the cessation of suffering. What is knowing the path? Knowing the Noble Eightfold Path. What is knowing exhaustion? Knowing the exhaustion of desire, hatred, and delusion. What is knowing non-arising? Knowing that the continuum of existence does not arise. What is knowing the Dharma? Knowing and fully understanding the five aggregates as illusion. What is knowing subsequent realization? Knowing that the sense bases, elements, and dependent origination are impermanent. What is knowing convention? Knowing the minds of other sentient beings and other individuals with the mind. What is knowing familiarity? Knowing by what one knows the path and is completely purified. What is knowing speech as it is? It is the wisdom of the Tathagata's omniscience. Subhuti, this too, in that undemonstrative way, is the Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is as follows: three faculties. What are the three? The faculty of "I shall know the unknown," the faculty of knowledge, and the faculty of having understood. What is the faculty of "I shall know the unknown"? It is when the faculties of faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom of a learner who has not yet attained realization have not fully manifested. This is the faculty of "I shall know the unknown."

It is to be known as the faculty of knowing. Among them, what is the faculty of complete knowing? The faculty of faith, the faculty of diligence, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of samadhi, and the faculty of wisdom of those learners who have become completely knowledgeable. This is called the faculty of complete knowing. Among them, what is the faculty of realization through complete knowing? The faculty of faith, the faculty of diligence, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of samadhi, and the faculty of wisdom of non-learners, Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas. Subhuti, this is called the faculty of realization through complete knowing. Subhuti, this is also the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva in the manner of non-objectification. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like this: there are three samadhis. What are the three? Samadhi with vitarka and vicara, samadhi without vitarka but with vicara only, and samadhi without vitarka and without vicara. Among them, what is samadhi with vitarka and vicara? Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with vitarka and vicara, possessing joy and bliss born of seclusion, having closely cultivated and abiding in the first dhyana. This is called samadhi with vitarka and vicara. Among them, what is samadhi without vitarka but with vicara only? The interval between the first dhyana and the second dhyana. This is called samadhi without vitarka but with vicara only. Among them, what is samadhi without vitarka and without vicara? The second dhyana, the third dhyana, the fourth dhyana, the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and the attainment of cessation of perception and feeling. This is called samadhi without vitarka and without vicara. Subhuti, this is also non-objectification.

In the manner of non-attention, it is the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: the ten recollections. What are the ten? They are: recollection of the Buddha, recollection of the Dharma, recollection of the Sangha, recollection of morality, recollection of generosity, recollection of the deities, recollection of the in-and-out breaths, recollection of birth, recollection of death, and recollection of the appearance of the body. Subhuti, this also, in the manner of non-attention, is the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, and the nine successive abidings. What are the four dhyanas? Here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, being secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, he dwells, having attained the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion and endowed with joy and bliss. Then, with the cessation of initial application and sustained application, having inner clarity, the mind becoming one-pointed, without initial application and without sustained application, he dwells, having attained the second dhyana, which is born of concentration and endowed with joy and bliss. Then, being free from attachment to joy, being endowed with mindfulness, he dwells in equanimity with full awareness, experiencing bliss with the body, and the noble ones describe him as being endowed with mindfulness, experiencing bliss, and being equanimous, he dwells, having attained the third dhyana, which is without joy. Then, having abandoned bliss and having abandoned suffering, with the previous cessation of mental pleasure and mental displeasure, being without bliss and without suffering, he dwells, having attained the fourth dhyana, which is purified by equanimity and mindfulness, in the manner of non-attention. These are the four dhyanas. What are the four immeasurables?
